"This may indeed be considered as an original History of London. No subject at all connected with the undertaking seems to have escaped the author's notice. The work is full of biographical notices, curious anecdotes, local peculiarities, charters, presentments, &c. &c.; and what is not less deserving praise, the extracts from Registers are so various, that certificates may be obtained, if necessary, of upwards of a thousand eminent names, exclusive of inscriptions on monuments. The labour of such an undertaking is so manifest, and its utility at the same time so obvious, that it seems a sort of public duty to promote it by all possible accommodation. We have no doubt that when finished this will be the most comprehensive account of London that has ever been published." British Critic.

4078 Malte-Brun's System of Universal Geography, 6 vols. 8vo. in 12 Parts, (pub. at 4l. 10s.) 3l. 10s. 1821

"Its design is to bring together the whole of Ancient and Modern Geography. But immense and difficult as the undertaking is, the Author has done and is doing it ample justice. It is at once a System of Geography for every-day use, and at the same time an example of enlarged philosophical views. It is alike calculated to gratify those who read merely from curiosity, and those who seek its pages for the more definite purposes of education and scientific intelligence. It is admirable in its original form, it is well translated, it is printed in a fair style; and, in fine, it is a work that neither library, nor family, nor school should be without." John Harris, according to Wood, was, in 1606, admitted perpetual Fellow of New College, Oxford. In 1617, he was unanimously elected one of the Proctors of the University, and two years after was made Greek Professor; both which offices he executed to his great honor and credit. Afterwards he became Prebendary of Winchester, D.D. and at length Warden of Wykeham's Coll. near Winchester. He was so admirable a Grecian, and so noted a Preacher, that Sir Henry Saville used frequently to say, 'that he was second to St. Chrysostome.' Wood, in his Athenæ, vol. 3, p. 445, gives a List of his Works, but does not mention the above.
