This was Dr. Parr's copy, and contains the following note:-" For the story of the Hermit, generally, but erroneously, esteemed original, see Dr. Moore's Divine Dialogues, p. 321, and Howell's Familiar Letters, book 4. p. 435. Howell, in a Letter to the Marquis of Hertford, ascribes it to a noble and speculative Knight, Sir P. Herbert, in his late Conceptions to his son."—S. Parr.

"As to his learning, it was the most profound, and, I may add, the most varied and extensive, of any man of his age. He combined in himself a rare and happy union of qualities, that are seldom compatible with each other; quick perception and sound judgment; retentive memory and vivid imagination; to these he added unwearied assiduity and accurate research. As a classical scholar, he was supreme-deeply versed in history, especially that of his own country; in metaphysical and moral philosophy not to be excelled; in theology he had read more extensively and thought more deeply, than most of those who claim the highest literary fame in that department. He was well read in controversy, though he loved not controversialists, for his benevolent and tolerating spirit was shocked by any thing like rancour among men who believe a gospel of love, and worship a God of love, and yet can let loose the malignant and vindictive passions, in their religious disputes against each other."-See Archd. Butler's Sermon, which the British Critic properly designates "a proud monument to the talents of the living and the virtues of the dead." BIBLIOTHECA PARRIANA.-A Catalogue of the Library of the late Reverend and learned Dr. Samuel Parr; interspersed with his own Notes, Observations, and Opinions on Books and their Authors; compiled from the original Manuscripts in possession of his Executors, by H. 1827 the same, LARGE PAPER, royal 8vo. only 40 copies printed, scarce, 17. 10s. 1827

** Very few copies rem in unsold of this highly interesting literary relic, which contains upwards of one thousand original remarks, political, critical, biographical, and miscellaneous, of one of the most distinguished scholars of this country. The index of the names adduced in the notes, shows at one view a large proportion of his friends and

connexions.

"This catalogue appears to have originated from the honest pride which Dr. Parr felt in having been able to amass a large collection of books with very confined means, and perhaps also from the pardonable vanity of proclaiming to posterity-as he recounted the manner in which he obtained many of them-the terms of friendship on which he had lived with some of the wisest and wittiest and noblest personages of his time. His books were his faithful companions through a life of long-continued study and exertion, and, like those of the poet Lucilius, were the faithful depositories of his most sacred opinions. With these prefatory remarks, we proceed to notice the catalogue itself, which is, as might be expected, extremely curious aud interesting, and illustrates in a remarkable manner most of the leading features of Dr. Parr's political and literary character."-Times.

"His collection of books is certainly an extremely valuable one, and the catalogue before us may rank with the most useful that have ever appeared. The remarks appended to particular books are truly interesting. They are full of associations with the names of the most eminent men of the present or past times; and they are very characteristic of the learning, acuteness, and tolerance of the writer."-Sphynx.

"Some of the notes are curious, as they give the history of particular works; some as presenting anecdotes or characteristic traits of the author; others are critical; others complimentary or vituperative; all are interesting, as conveying in a few words the knowledge or the opinions, the predilections or the prejudices, of a shrewd man and distinguished scholar."-Atlas.

"A luminous catalogue, most judiciously compiled and classed by the editor, Mr. Henry Bohn. On account of its various annotations and criticisms by Dr. Parr himself, and the rarity of the articles which it contains, it is one of the most curious that has ever issued from the English Press."-New Times.
