And altho' have offended thee by my negligent performance of thofe holy duties, which fought to perform on this thy holy-day, be not provoked to withdraw the affiftance of thy Holy Spirit from me, and to leave me to the folly and vanity of my own will, but forgive me all my past offences, and mercifully hear my prayers, and let my cry come unto thee in the day of my neceffity. O

Eternal God, who searchest the hearts and trieft the reins of man, and knoweft his thoughts long before, dispose me frequently to examine the ftate of my own mind, and to compare my actions with the rule of thy laws: raife in me an abhorrence of whatsoever offends thee, that may always turn my feet unto thy teftimonies; and let neither felflove, floth, negligence, nor any other darling paffion fo impofe upon or divert me from fearching into the corruptions of my own heart, as to escape my repentance; but vouchsafe me the affiftance of thy Holy Spirit, that may fo impartially judge and condemn myself, that may not be condemn'd at thy fearful judgment-feat; and that in a full difcovery of my own vilenefs may humble myself under the rod of thy divine justice, and, from my heart condemning all those follies whereby f have provoked thy wrath and indignation against me, 7 may carneftly folicit thy pardon and forgiveness, thro' the merits of thy Son Jesus Christ, our Lord. Lmighty God, just and terrible in judgments obftinate and rebellious finners, but of infinite mercy to fuch as truly repent, and turn unto thee; look upon me with the eyes of mercy, who now confefs that am not worthy to lift up my hands to the throne of thy grace. Thou haft, by innumerable inftances, manifefted thyfelf to be a moft kind and indulgent father; but, alas! 7 have abused thy goodness, and made very ungrateful returns: therefore 7 lament and bewail the corruption of my nature, moft forrowfully confeffing before thee, that have too great a defire after the things of this world, which have taken fuch hold of my affections, that J neither love thee, serve thee, nor obey thee as 7 ought to do. Oh! how cold are my devotions! How wandering, dead and distracted are my prayers! And how imperfect are all my religious duties! Give me then, O God! an heart to humble mySelf before thee, for 7 have greatly offended thee, by luft and intemperance; by peevifhnefs, paffion and anger; These particuby covetousness and ambition; by pride and envy; lars may be by prejudice and ill-will towards my neighbour; by varied acmurmuring and repining at the difpenfationsofthy accufation of cording to the providence, and by an unwillingness to refign my- every one's felf to thy all-wife difpofal. Therefore my hope confcience.

is only in thy mercy, which beg thro' the infinite merits of my dear Redeemer. For, 7 know that am loft and undone for ever, if thou rejecteft me. Oh then! turn not thy face from me, nor caft thy fervant away in difpleafure; but have mercy upon me thro' the interceffion of thy beloved Son; and for the fake of his meritorious death and paffion, for all that he has done and fuffered for me, forgive all the fins and follies of my life paft, cleanfe me from all my fecret and unknown tranfgreffions, and be reconciled unto me, who am heartily forry for my fins, and grieved that have offended thee. Referve not my fins to be punished in the day of thy fierce anger; but fpare me and grant that may never fall into thofe evils, which my fins have justly deferved of thy justice. There is nothing 7 fo much defire as to be of the number of thine elect; for, thy favour is better than life itself, and the most perfect freedom is not to be compared to thy fervice. Grant me ftrength by the affiftance of thy Holy Spirit to forfake all my fins, and to reform whatever has been amifs in the temper and difpofition of my mind, or in any of the actions of my life, that when depart hencef may be received into that bleffed ftate where fin and death shall have no dominion over me; all which beg for the fake and in the name of Jesus Christ.
