cleanness, take away mine iniquities, and cleanse me from my sins. Let them not be found. Let them not be.

Look upon the face of Thy Christ. By His propitiation for the sins of the world, Lord, be merciful to me a sinner. merciful, O Lord, to me.

Be

Lord, hear me, help me, save me, for Thy deeplove, for Thy own gracious promise' sake, for Thy own tender mercies' sake, for the merits and sufferings and love of Jesus Thy Beloved in Whom Thou hast made penitents accepted.

And Thou, O Lord, our Christ and God, O Saviour Christ, O Christ my Saviour, by the strength of Thy Love, by the Love of Thy Cross, God be merciful, despise me not.

Lord, I have sinned against Thee. I have sinned, Most Beloved. Have pity on me. I have wandered, Lord, seek Thou me. Lord, I repent. Help my impenitence.

Lord, all my desire is before Thee. Lord, Thou knowest, knowest far more than I, my sin, my need, my nothingness, my contrition; my fear of a safety that may not be mine; my dread of casting something less sinful than my real self upon Thy Divine Mercy. . . And Thy pity is greater than my need. Out of the deep my soul crieth unto Thee, Thou beloved Son of God, O Lord, Thou Son of Man. My soul fainteth

within me; help me, O God, my Saviour, for the glory of Thy name.

Lord, speak the word only, and I shall be clean.

O the world's Ransom, blessed Mary's Son, O tender Mercy that from on high hath visited us, by Thy great compassion, O God, our Redeemer, by Thy everlasting mercy, let me hear the gracious Voice that spake peace in the storm, saying unto me, Be of good comfort; thy sins are forgiven thee.

Jesus, Master, have mercy on me. O Lord, Thou Son of David have mercy on me. Jesus, Thou Son of David, Lord, say unto me, Thou art loosed from thine infirmity. Say unto my soul, I am thy salvation. Say unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee. Master, say on.

And Thou, all-holy Spirit, Lord, I beseech Thee, by the blood of the Cross, in Thy unspeakable loving kindness, despise me not. Turn Thee again, O forbearing Lord, and be very gracious unto me at the sound of my cry.

Merciful and pitying Lord, long-suffering and of great goodness, I have sinned, Lord. I have sinned against Thee. But I take with me words, and turn to Thee, saying—

I repent, Lord. Lord, I repent. Help Thou my want of repentance. Forgive my sin, and receive my prayer. God be merci

ful unto me.

Leave me not, O Lord, my Salvation; let not Thy loving mercy utterly forsake me, for I am weak.

Grant me, O Lord, the holy comfort of Thy help; because Thy mercy is good, deliver me out of my distress. Let the wings of Thy mercy shadow me, bring me from beneath the shadow of the Cross unto my Father's house in peace. Amen.

AN ACT OF CONTRITION

Cast me not away from Thy Presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me

[ocr errors]

THOU compassionate Saviour of sinful men, look down from heaven and have mercy upon me. O consider my trouble. O save me, O help me, O come to me; for without Thee I can do nothing.

O that with one who was a sinner, I could weep much, and love much, having so much to be forgiven !

O gracious Lord, look on me as Thou didst on Peter, and may that compassionate look of Thine so pierce my soul that I too may weep bitterly.

Alas for me, that I should ever have offended against so tender a Father!

Alas for me, that I should have repaid the wondrous love and unutterable suffer

ings of my Blessed Redeemer for me, with nothing but the sins which caused those very sufferings.

Alas for me, that I should have grieved the Holy Spirit by rejecting so many of His good motions, from whom only I derive strength and consolation.

Alas for me, my very prayers and repentance are accompanied by so many failings, that I sometimes fear that Thou, O Lord, wilt not hear such prayers, nor regard such repentance. Yet, O Blessed Saviour, Thou art touched with the feeling of our infirmities, Thou wilt not break the bruised reed, nor quench the smoking flax. . . Why art thou so heavy then, O my soul, and why art thou so disquieted within me? O put thy trust in thy Saviour, Who is the health of thy countenance, and thy God.

O Thou Divine Lover of souls, who camest to save sinners, and saidst, Come unto me, all ye who are weary and heavy laden, and I will refresh you; I desire to come to Thee, for with Thee is plenteous redemption. I come to Thee, from Whom I have erred and strayed as a sheep that is lost; but Thou, O good Shepherd, Who didst lay down Thy life for the sheep, Who camest to seek and to save that which was lost, seek Thy servant, O Lord, for I do not forget Thy Commandments.

A troubled spirit is a sacrifice unto Thee,

O Lord; a broken and contrite heart, Thou wilt not despise. This do I desire to offer Thee.

me.

O Holy Father, keep and defend me.

O Most Blessed Son, save and deliver me. O Divine Spirit, strengthen and comfort

O High and Holy Trinity, O Sovereign Lord God, have mercy on me. Amen.

AN ACT OF RESOLUTION

We will not sin, knowing we are counted Thine

LORD God, with shame I confess that other gods beside Thee have had dominion over me. Sin hath reigned in my mortal body, and I have obeyed it in the lusts thereof; but henceforth I resolve to serve none beside Thee; to forsake my sins and turn to Thee, that Thou mayest have mercy upon me, even to Thee, that Thou mayest abundantly pardon.

O God, Thou art my God, I will have no other gods beside Thee. With my mind I believe in Thee, with my lips I confess, with my heart I love Thee.

I believe, O Lord, in Thee,—Father, Word, Spirit, One God; that by Thy Power all things were created; that through Thy tender Love for Thy whole creation all
