at the strait gate, to tread the narrow way, would never have been uttered, if Thou didst not also give the strength needed to obey Thy loving call; that the way is narrow only to those who love Thee not; that Thou art with those who seek for Thee; they have Thee already who wish for Thee,--they who love Thee are sure of Thy Love.

Yea, that Thou art Thyself the Gate and the Way whither Thy Heavenly Voice is evermore calling.

O help me to remember Thy exceeding great and precious promise spoken of old in vision to Thy beloved: To him that overcometh, will I grant to sit with Me in My throne; even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.

Thou canst not be untrue, O blessed One; only help me to be true to Thee. Help me to keep the word of Thy patience, that Thou mayest keep me in the hour of temptation. Grant that my faith in Thee may grow ever more and more true and strong; that every prayer may quicken, every blessing strengthen, every trial confirm it. Thus evermore approaching Thine Altar for the fire of love and purity which there burns, tasting of the Heavenly Gift, and the power of Thy coming world,―Thou, O Lord of mercy, wilt lead me, even by the springs of water wilt Thou guide me,and Thy Presence, as a shining Light that

shineth more and more unto the perfect day, shall go with me, and Thou wilt give And when Thou, O great

me rest.

Shepherd, dost go forth, Thy sheep will follow Thee.

O holy Father, merciful and long suffering, bring me to that heavenly home whither the Way leadeth,—that heavenly home whither the Lord Jesus has gone before, and where at last all His faithful ones shall be gathered together, to be with Him, and to abide with Him, for ever and for ever.

O good Shepherd of the sheep, lead me and feed me, and nothing shall be wanting, in the place of the pasture where Thou hast folded me, until Thou bring me safe to the pasture of Eternal Life.

HEAVENLY DESIRES

Where your treasure is, there shall your heart be also

HREE in One, have mercy on me.

up my soul; up to Thy glorious high Throne, whereon sitteth One in fashion as a Man. He pleads my cause, He

redeemed my life.

Out of the deep have I cried unto Thee, O Emmanuel; Thou didst hear my voice;

Thou didst draw near in the day that I called upon Thee.

Thou faintest not, O Lord, never more canst Thou be weary, O ponder now the voice of my desire; O hearken now to the exceeding loud cry of my soul,-Jesu, mercy.

. . . . I will remember Thy wondrous mercy towards me; Thou art with me, yea, within me; Thou canst not forget me; never wilt Thou forsake me.

I waited for Thee, O Lord, more than they that watch for the morning. I was willing in the day of Thy power, the day of Thy mystic Feast, when, as of old, O Word of the Father, Thou didst cry aloud unto the listening souls of Thy redeemed, Let him that is athirst, come unto Me.

I prayed Thee to lead me in the Zionward way, whither also my face was turned, and Thou hast joined me unto Thyself in a covenant that may not be forgotten.

I have no strength, dear Lord, but Thou art with me. Thou art my light, and my salvation, what then need I fear? Thou art the strength of my life, of whom then need I be afraid?

These things do I desire of Thee, my Lord, these, these will I seek after, that I may behold Thy fair beauty all the days of my life, and learn the holy secrets of Thy love; that remembering Thy mighty sacrifice, O Divine Mediator, I may die daily

unto sin, and go onward unto holiness; ever feeling more and more that here I have no abiding city, but that there where Thou art is my true and everlasting home, there, by the shores of that crystal sea, my heavenly Gennesareth, there that New Jerusalem, Whose Light Thou art, O Lamb of God.

O Hope of the ends of the earth, and of those who remain in the sea afar, wild is the sea through which I am faring onward; much do I long to be with Thee.

Yet is the night far spent, and the dawn of an endless day is at hand. Yea, through my tears I can discern Thee, as Thou standest on the eternal shore.

Soon, O Lord, bring me to that haven where I would be; soon may I reach thee, thou glorious land, soon stand within thy gates, O heavenly Jerusalem! Wearied,

I would fain soon rest, in the city that hath foundations, whose Builder and Maker Thou art, O King Eternal, Immortal, Invisible, for ever and everywhere reigning, the Father of men and of Angels, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of Him Whose Name I delight to hear, and by Whose most precious Blood I was redeemed; for Whose sake I entreat Thee to hear me now. Amen.

UNION WITH OUR LORD AND WITH
EACH OTHER IN HIM

We, being many, are one Bread and one Body; for we are all partakers of that one Bread

[ocr errors]

GIVE Thee humble thanks, O loving Saviour, for the grace Thou hast so lately bestowed on me and others, even Thyself, to sustain our drooping souls.

Grant that this partaking of Thee may pour new life into our souls, that we may believe in Thee, and love Thee, and keep Thy sayings, and follow Thee more earnestly than we have ever done.

Grant that all we who have drawn near unto Thee, may be drawn nearer unto each other, bound together by the unseen chain of Thy love, in the communion of Thy Spirit, and the holy fellowship of Thy Saints, that when our work here has been bravely and patiently done for Thee, we may go in together to that house of many mansions Thou hast gone to prepare for those who love Thee. Amen. Amen.
