things have been begun anew in Thy Word, Who for us men, and for our salvation, was made Flesh, was conceived and born, suffered and was crucified, died and was buried, descended and rose again, ascended and sat down, will return and will repay; I believe that by the shining forth and working of Thy Holy Spirit hath been built on the tried and precious Stone, a spiritual house, a Temple of living stones, a royal priesthood, offering up spiritual sacrifices acceptable unto Thee; I believe that in this Church of the living God, which He hath purchased with His own Blood, we receive Thy manifold gifts of grace,-have communion with pure and holy beings who have never known sin nor Death, who yet watch with pure, keen sympathy, our struggles with the evil within and around us; have our portion with Thy children, and our lot among Thy Saints; and have forgiveness of sins; that in it we are waiting for the Resurrection of the body into Everlasting Life, and are looking according to Thy Promise for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

This most holy Faith, once delivered to the Saints, I believe, O Lord. Help Thou mine unbelief.

Olead me forth in Thy Truth, and learn me, for Thou art my God; let Thy loving Spirit lead me forth into the land of uprightness.

Surely it is meet to be said unto God, That which I know not, teach Thou me: if I have done wrong I will do so no more.

I renew, O Lord, from my heart, Thy vows that are upon me to renounce the Devil and all his works, the vanities of the evil World, and the deceits of the Flesh.

Let Thine Hand help me, for I have chosen Thy Precepts. I am Thine: O save me, for I will keep Thy Commandments.

Rest in the Lord, O my soul; trust also in Him, and He will bring it to pass.

In the Lord's Word will I trust; yea, in the Lord's Word will I comfort me.

The Lord will perfect the good work He hath begun in me; Thy Mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever; forsake not the work of Thine own Hands: for His sake Who came into this world that we should no longer live to ourselves, but unto Him Who died for us, and rose again. Amen. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR PARDON

According to the multitude of Thy mercies, do away mine offences

[ocr errors]

FATHER of mercies, O God of all consolation, be merciful to me a sinner. Lord, remember all Thy gracious calls of sinners to repentance, all Thy declarations of mercy.

Lord, remember all Thy exceeding great and precious promises to penitent sinners. Lord, remember that Thou didst so love the world as to give Thy Only well-beloved Son a Ransom for it.

O Heavenly Father, Thou that didst give Thy Only Son for us, wilt Thou not with Him freely give us all things-and if all things, wilt Thou not give us the pardon of our sins?

O my God, I firmly believe that Thou wilt; on that dear Ransom my Saviour hath paid for me, and on all the gracious Promises which for His sake Thou hast made to me, I wholly rely; here only is the sure and steadfast anchor of my soul, to which my hope and faith shall ever adhere.

Behold Lord, though my failings are many, yet to the utmost of my power I have confessed, and bewailed, and forsaken my sins.

O Thou, Who art faithful and just, forgive me my sins, and cleanse me from all my unrighteousness; for Thine infinite Mercies' sake, for Thy Truth and Promise' sake, for all the Merits and Sufferings of the Son of Thy Love in Whom Thou art always well pleased. Amen. Amen.

A MEDITATION

AY I draw near to receive the Heavenly Gift, the Life of Him Who died? And wilt Thou come to me who have so oft offended against Thee? Yea, Lord, for Thy Word is Truth.

Thou art my God, and I will thank Thee, Thou art my God, and I will praise Thee. How may I appear in the Presence of God, before Whose eyes the past lieth open, Who only knoweth the things that shall be hereafter? Lord, if Thou wilt Thou canst make me clean. Cleanse Thou the sin-defiled body, the sin-disturbed soul, the sin-darkened spirit. Wash me in the mystic, cleansing flood, and I shall be whiter than snow.

O Good Saviour of the World, Who by Thy Cross and precious Blood hast redeemed me, help me, O Lord God. Hear me,

for my spirit waxeth faint: forgive me, for I confess my sin. Hearken unto the prayer that goeth not out of feigned lips: restore me, for I am penitent. For Thy Name's sake, make no long tarrying. O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for Thine Own sake, O my God, for I am called by Thy most Holy Name.

AN ACT OF OBLATION

An offering of a free heart will I give Thee,

Lord

Bastet before me life and death, and LESSED be Thy name, O Lord, Who

hast bid me choose life. Behold, Lord, I do with all my heart choose life; I choose Thee, O my God, for Thou art my Life.

Save, O Lord, and hear me, King of Heaven, and accept my sacrifice, even the sacrifice of my whole heart, which I now give Thee.

O accept me for the sake of that Holy Life once offered on the Cross.

O my God, I offer to Thee myself, my body, soul, and spirit; all that I have, am, I offer entirely to Thy service.

O Lord, I entreat Thee to sanctify me throughout, and to preserve me blameless unto that Day,
