APPENDIX I.

COMPARISON OF READINGS.

The following list of variations noted in the different copies is not intended to include all the points of difference in spelling or punctuation. To do this would very greatly lengthen the list, and would hardly serve any useful purpose. So far as these points are concerned, the general character of the various impressions may be sufficiently estimated by the pages reproduced in facsimile. Two classes of variations seem to be worth special notice: (1) those which are clearly due to an error of the printers, and are recorded to indicate the amount of such error in the several impressions; (2) those which affect the sense or grammatical construction of the phrase in which they

Occur.

The text of 15 has been taken as the standard, the references being to the page and line of the facsimile. Those of its readings which are clearly due to error are printed in italic type. The symbol 12, where it occurs, covers all the copies which agree with 12 throughout; for the pages common to 2 and F, the symbol 12 = 2 is used: for those peculiar to 2 and F, the symbol 2 covers both copies. Where the reading seems to have been affected by the division between two lines, an upright stroke marks the point at which this division occurs.
