It is evident unto all men, diligently reading Holy Scripture, and ancient authors, says the preface to the ordinal of the church, that, from the apostles' times, there have been these officers in Christ' s church bishops, priests, and deacons The first, or superior order, were intrusted with the government of the church, and with the power of ordaining or admitting men to the inferior orders. The second order, deriving their power through the hands of Bishops, were empowered to preach the gospel, and administer the sacraments of the church. The third order, we're general assistants in the service of the church, and charged with the care of sick and poor people. These three orders are known in scripture, by the names, first of apostles.
