HYMNS

FOR

DOMESTIC AND PRIVATE WORSHIP.

2 L 2

HYMNS FOR MORNING AND EVENING.

501.

1

"My voice shalt thou hear in the morning." Psalm v. 3. L. M.

I AWAKE, my soul! and, with the sun,
Thy daily stage of duty run:

Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise,
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2 Thy precious time mispent, redeem;
Each present day, thy last esteem;
Improve thy talent with due care;
For the great day thyself prepare.

3 In conversation be sincere ;

Keep conscience as the noon-tide clear. Think how All-seeing God thy ways, Thy every secret thought, surveys. 4 Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart! And with the angels bear thy part; Who, all night long, unwearied sing High praise to the Eternal King.

5 All praise to Thee who safe hast kept, And hast refreshed me while I slept. Grant, Lord! when I from death shall I may of endless life partake.

[wake,

6 Lord! I my vows to Thee renew.
Disperse my sins as morning dew.
Guard my first springs of thought and
And with Thyself my spirit fill.

7 Direct, control, suggest, this day,
All I design, or do, or say;

[will,

That all my powers, with all their might, In Thy sole glory, may unite.

8 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow: Praise Him, all creatures here below: Praise Him above, ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

502. "I will both lay me down in peace and sleep."
Psalm iv. 8. L. M.

1 GLORY* to Thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light.
Keep me, Oh keep me, King of kings!
Beneath Thy own Almighty wings.
2 Forgive me, Lord! for Thy dear Son,
The ill that I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed:
Teach me to die, that so I may
Rise glorious at the judgment-day.

Originally written, "All praise to Thee, my God, this night."|

4 Oh may my soul on Thee

repose,

And with sweet sleep mine eyelids close;
Sleep that may me more vigorous make,
To serve my God when I awake.

5 When in the night I sleepless lie,
My soul with heavenly thoughts supply:
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,
No powers of darkness me molest.

6 Oh, when shall I in endless day,
For ever chase dark sleep away,
And hymns, with the supernal choir,
Incessant sing, and never tire!

7 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow :
Praise Him, all creatures here below :
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

503. “At midnight I will.... give thanks unto thee.”

Psalm cxix. 62. L. M.

1 MY God! now I from sleep awake,
The sole possession of me take:
From midnight terrors me secure,
And guard my heart from thoughts impure.

hand!

2 Oh may I always ready stand,
With my lamp burning in my
May I in sight of heaven rejoice,
Whene'er I hear the Bridegroom's voice.
3 All praise to Thee, in light arrayed,
Who light Thy dwelling-place hast made:
A boundless ocean of bright beams
From Thy all-glorious Godhead streams.
