will govern with wisdom, and execute judgment and justice in the land, and in his days Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell in security. This is the name by which Jehovah shall call him OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. After this, saith Jehovah Behold the day shall come when they shall no more say, as Jehovah liveth, who brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; but as Jehovah liveth, who brought up, and who conducted the seed of the house of Israel from the North country, and from all countries whither I had driven them, that they might dwell in their own land.-See Rev. B. Blancy's Translation of Jeremiah.

The Gospel.-St. John, vi. 5.

With the exception of the first four verses, this Gospel is the same as that for the fourth Sunday in Lent.

When Jesus (who had retired with his disciples to à mountain near the sea of Tiberias) saw the multitude gathering in that solitary place, he was desirous to give them refreshment before he sent them away, and asked Philip (though with a view only to try him) where he might procure food to supply so large a multitude? Philip told him, that all the money they had could not purchase bread enough to supply every one with a morsel: but another of the disciples, at the same time informing him that a lad there had five loaves and two small fishes, he ordered the people, who were about five thousand, to sit down in companies on the grass'; and taking the bread and fish, he gave thanks, and distributed them, through the hands of his disciples, among the people. When they were all satisfied, he bade his disciples gather up the fragments, that nothing might be lost. With these they filled twelve baskets. The multitude on

over nature, and was calculated to make a most powerful impression on the minds of the spectators, But it seems to have had a spiritual as well as a literal meaning: bearing refe rence to that spiritual food, that celestial bread of life, which our Lord was then dispensing in such abundance to those that hungered and thirsted after righteousness..-Bp. Porteus.

This feeding of so vast a multitude, by a method altogether extraordinary and miraculous, should make us duly consider and acknowledge that bounteous providence of God, which every day feeds numbers infinitely greater, in a most wonderful, though ordinary manner. For what proportion do five thousand men bear, to those numberless kindreds and countries, that constantly subsist on His liberality? What is this one marvellous enlargement of five loaves and two fishes, to the inconceivable productions of animals, the variety of plants and herbs, and other increase of the earth; and the many unknown ways by which He opens His hand, and filleth all things living with plenteousness!-Dean Stanhope.

Note.-Josephus, and Dr. Axford allow the weight of a shekel to be four drachms. The Encyclopedia Britannica and Lempriere allow only 3 drachms 39 grains, thus making a difference of 21 grs. The weight of a talent of gold of the Sanctuary is 3,000 shekels of the same standard, which according to the two first named authorities, amounts to 125 lb. Troy; and according to the latter, to only 114lb. 0 oz. 6 drs. The deficiency of 21 grs. in each shekel, will in the aggregate of a talent amount to 10 lb. 11 oz. 2drs.

If the 125 lbs. be valued at £4 per oz., as it is by Whiston, Clarke, Lempriere and others, it will give the value of the talent, as stated in the Tables, viz. £6,000. Dr. Axford allows only £3 per oz. which reduces the value of the talent to £4,500.

The proportionate value of gold and silver is as 16 to 1. If the talent of silver, which is equal to £375, be multiplied by 16, the product will be £6,000.
