days, Jehovah made the heaven, and the earth, and the sea, with all that they contain; but he ceased on the seventh day, blessed it, and commanded it to be kept holy.

5. Reverence and obey thy father and thy mother, that thou mayest receive the blessing of the Lord thy God.

6. Thou shalt not by any act of violence, deprive thy neighbour of life; neither shalt thou shorten the days of thy parents or benefactors by undutifulness and ingratitude.

7. Thou shalt not violate the sanctity of the marriage vow.

8. Thou shalt not steal, or in any way defraud thy neighbour; neither shalt thou be guilty of extortion, oppression, corruption, or the perversion of justice.

9. Thou shalt testify nothing against thy neighbour that is not strictly true.

10. Thou shalt not be anxious to possess thy neighbour's property in any shape; lest thou be induced to commit a crime, to satisfy thy sinful and inordinate wishes.

What duties are particularly taught thee by these commandments?

My duty to God and my duty to my neighbour.

What is thy duty to God?

My duty to God is, to believe in his existence and power; to love him for his goodness, with all the energies of my heart and mind; to worship him, and to adore him, to give him thanks for his mercies; to place my whole trust and confidence in his wisdom, to implore his protection and guidance in every action; to honour his sacred name and his holy word; and truly and faithfully to serve him all the days of my life.

What duties do the commandments enjoin thee with respect to thy neighbour?

My duty towards my neighbour is to love him as myself, and to do to all men as I would they should do unto me; to love, honour, and succour my father and mother; to honour and obey the king, and all that are put in authority under him. To submit myself to all my governors, teachers, spiritual pastors, and masters. To order myself lowly and reverently to all my betters. To hurt nobody by word or deed. To be true and just in all my dealings. To bear no malice nor hatred in my heart. To keep my hands from picking and stealing, and my tongue from evil speaking, lying, and slandering. To keep my body in tempérance, soberness, and chastity; not to covet or desire other men's goods: but to learn and labour truly to get my own living, and to do my duty in that state of life unto which it shall please God to call me.

My good child, know this, that thou art not able of thyself to do these things, nor to walk in the commandments of God, and to serve him, without his special grace, which thou must learn at all times to call for by diligent prayer. Let me hear, therefore, if thou canst repeat the Lord's prayer.

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

They teach me to love my neighbour as myself, and on every occasion to act by him as I should wish him in similar circumstances to act by me. I am taught to love (and if necessary) to support my father and mother; to honour and obey the king, and all persons appointed by him for the administration of government and justice; to be submissive and docile to all my instructors, civil and religious; to behave to my superiors with humility and deference; to injure no one either by word or action; to be true and just in all my dealings with others; to retain no malice nor hatred in my heart against any individual; to keep my hands from pilfering and stealing, and my tongue from evil speaking, lying and slandering; to be temperate, sober and chaste; to indulge no anxious thought of possessing the property of another, but contentedly labour for my own support, and conscientiously fulfil my duty in that station of life, in which Divine Providence shall see fit to place me.

The Lord's Prayer.

O Almighty God our heavenly Father, who dwellest in the highest heaven, may thy sacred name ever be revered by men, the creatures of thy bounty! may righteousness flourish, and thy will be obeyed, on earth as it is in heaven; vouchsafe unto us this day the food convenient for us; and nourish our souls with thy heavenly grace unto eternal life. "Let it please thee, O Lord, to remit all our transgressions, and enable us, from a proper sense of thy pardoning love, freely to forgive all those who may have injured or offended us.' Suffer us not to fall into temptation too mighty for us to withstand, but deliver us, O Lord God, from all dangers, both spiritual and temporal. For thou alone art supreme in dominion; almighty in power; and all glorious in self-existence, now and for ever. Amen.

What desirest thou of God in this prayer?

I desire my Lord God our heavenly Father, who is the giver of all goodness, to send his grace unto "me, and to all people, that we may worship him, serve him, and obey him as we ought to do. And I pray unto God that he will send us all things that be needful, both for our souls and bodies; and that he will be merciful unto us, and forgive us our sins; and that it will please him to save and defend us in all dangers, ghostly and bodily; and that he will keep us from all sin and wickedness, and from our ghostly enemy, and from everlasting death; and this I trust he will do of his mercy and goodness, through our Lord Jesus Christ, and therefore I say, Amen. So be it.

How many sacraments hath Christ ordained in his church?

Two only, as generally necessary to salvation ; that is to say, Baptism, and the Supper of the Lord. What meanest thou by this word sacrament?

I mean an outward visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace, given unto us, ordained by Christ himself, as a means whereby we receive the same, and a pledge to assure us thereof.

How many parts are there in a Sacrament? Two the outward visible sign, and the inward spiritual grace.

What do you implore of God in the Lord's Prayer? I begin with a thankful acknowledgment of the Almighty goodness of God, who permits us to address him as "Our Father," and I pray that I and all mankind may ever think of his holy name with peculiar reverence and awe; I pray, that righteousness may be diffused over all the earth; and that man may live in obedience to its laws, as the blessed angels do in heaven; I implore him to supply us with the necessaries requisite for our temporal wants, and with an entire submission to his will; I pray that he will be pleased to forgive us our sins, and enable us, in imitation of his merciful goodness, freely to forgive our enemies; that he will be our guardian and protector against all dangers, spiritual and bodily; that he will preserve us from sin, from cur spiritual enemy the devil, and from everlasting death. And I rely on his mercy and goodness, that he will do this for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ, for which reason I subjoin, Amen, which means So be it, or, Be it unto me, O Lord, according to my petition.

How many sacraments hath Christ ordained in his church?

Christ has ordained only two sacraments, namely, Baptism, and the Lord's Supper.

What is the meaning of the word sacrament?

The word sacrament implies an outward visible sign or symbol, of an inward spiritual grace imparted to us by God.

This sign was instituted by Christ himself, not only as a means by which we should receive that spiritual grace, but also as a pledge to assure us of its being given.

How many parts are there in a sacrament?

A sacrament consists of two parts: the one external, and the object of sight; the other an internal communication of spiritual grace.
