This work was prepared by order of H.M. Government of India. The specimens collected with a view to its compilation were at least 20,000 in number, and illustrative of nearly 900 species. The preface gives an account of all the naturalists who preceded the author in endeavouring to advance this branch of natural history in the East, with comments on such matters connected therewith as seem to be of interest to the scientific public, or relate to the economic value of the Fisheries.

This rare book is one of the earliest attempts at a really scientific representation of animal life. It was not superseded until half a century later when Geoffroy St. Hilaire's monumental work appeared. The book has an interest, historical, scientific, and artistic. Copies exist with plain plates.
