Both of these distinguished mathematicians were professors at Gresham College. Gunter's scale and Gunter's chain are well known, the latter being constantly used in land-surveying. In 1622 Gunter discovered by experiments that the declination of the magnetic needle had varied five degrees in forty-two years (see Cross-Staffe, bk. 2, chap. 5). He suspected an error and dropped his investigations. His successor at Gresham College, Henry Gellibrand, confirmed and established Gunter's results. Gunter when drawing the lines upon the dials in Whitehall Gardens made allowance for this variation. These dials were destroyed in 1697. 701 GYLDEN (H.).
