Sm. folio, 308 I., with a great number of woodcuts including a beautiful interlaced border (white on a black ground), numerous manual figure signs, woodcut initials, and mathematical diagrams, the inner margins of a few leaves at the end somewhat discoloured; a large and fine copy in the original vellum Venice, 1494 10 0 0

:

VERY RARE. De Morgan writes of this and the subsequent edition (1523) as follows: Both editions are by one printer, Paganino of Brescia, and are beautifully printed the type of the second being a good instance of the black letter in its state of approach to what is now called Roman letter. The work itself has been described by Hutton, Montucla, Peacock, Libri, etc.; but it would yet require a volume of description to do it justice. It is sometimes called the first work on arithmetic printed; but Calandri, Petri Borgo . . . and perhaps more, take precedence. But it is certainly the first printed on Algebra, and probably the first on book-keeping."

The work of Leonardo da Vinci is mentioned in the dedication to Soderini, in which the author says that he laboured on the Divina Proportione with so much ardour that he had added the illustrations engraved by our Leonardo Vinci (ut schemata quoque sua Vinci nostri Leonardi manibus scalpta addiderim). In the letter addressed to Lodovico Sforza, he bestows singularly high praise upon that great artist.

Leonard Digges, the learned author of the second book, is described as a most excellent mathematician, a skilful architect, and a most expert surveyor of land.". Athen. Oxon. His son, Thomas Digges, is known chiefly as the editor of his father's works.

The extraordinary talent of the members of this family in all branches of mathematics excited the admiration of De Morgan, who speaks of them as follows:"One of the most important names connected with the advancement of English mathematical science in the sixteenth century is that of Digges." A spy-glass, jealously hidden from the eyes of would-be imitators, was supposed to have been in their possession.
