This work, now complete, may fairly claim to be one of the most important aids to the study of systematic ornithology which has ever been produced.

Almost the last official duty which fell to Sir William Flower in his capacity as Director of the Natural History Departments, before he retired to enjoy a well-earned repose, was to pass through the press the pages of the final volume of the British Museum Catalogue of Birds, a work which may be justly described as the greatest of its kind.

It can, in fact, be only compared with the great works of GOULD and SELBY, which being on so much larger a scale, from containing nearly life-size portraits of the birds themselves, are beyond the reach of most students of British ornithology, even with the aid of a great public library.

RIVIERA NATURE NOTES. A popular account of the more
conspicuous Plants and Animals of the Riviera and the Maritime Alps.
Second Edition. Svo., pp. xv, 402, with frontispiece, 31 plates, and 93
illustrations in the text; cloth extra

1903

The quite remarkable success which attended the unpretentious first edition has resulted in the appearance of this greatly improved second edition. This book is the only one dealing in a general way with the Natural History of the Riviera. The anonymous author, in his preface, states that he has not thought it necessary to affect

0 10 6

the sober style of a scientific treatise-doubtless this will be considered an advantage
by many. The work is a valuable contribution to natural history, yet written in a
Inanner calculated to interest the unskilled observer. The notes were made at different
times during a long residence on the Riviera by a naturalist to whom the higher regions
were as familiar as the narrow strip of land along the coast where strangers congregate.
The larger part of the book was written without any thought of publication, and with
no other aim than to occupy the leisure of a lover of nature, fortunately not only able to
appreciate natural objects from a scientific point of view, but with a due regard to their
historical, mythological, and symbolical associations. The author, in his pretace,
writes: "Fault has been found with these little sketches on the score of unconven-
tionality and naiveté. It is a curious coincidence that Alphonse Karr, a classic (I must
not say another classic) of the Riviera, was also somewhat unconventional and not
quite free from naïveté. Possibly the climate may have something to do with it.
But, whatever may be its imperfections, this is, I believe, the only book dealing in
a general way with the Natural History of the Riviera."

The following are some opinions of celebrated botanists concerning the first
edition :-

"I am reading the Riviera Nature Notes' with great enjoyment. They are full of information, admirably told."-SIR JOSEPH HOOKER, F.R.S.

"An extremely interesting and suggestive book.”—Journal of Botany.

66

The author is a well-grounded botanist, who knows the district and the flora."-
PROFESSOR BOULGER.

Fort intéressant.”—M. C. NAUDIN, Director of the Botanic Gardens at Antibes.
"Un rayon de soleil du Midi."-M. H. CORREVON, Director of the Alpine Garden,
Geneva.

"Ihr Werk über die Riviera hat mir ausserordentlich gefallen."--PROFESSOR
O. PENZIG, Genoa.
