It was long known to contain numerous remains attesting its ancient magnificence. In its centre is an extensive ruin supposed to have been the palace of a Roman emperor, while to the south-west of the castle are the remains of an amphitheatre, with arches of fine workmanship. 959 BONNER STUDIEN. Sir Joseph Banks, upon an occasion of addressing the Society of Antiquaries, said, in reference to the representations of mosaic pavements in the above work, "Others have shown us what they thought these remains ought to have been, but Fowler has shown us what they are, and this is what we want." For graphic truthfulness and effect, these representations have never been equalled. The prospectuses are very interesting, and are now great rarities. The ingenious Mr. Fowler was originally a builder and architect ou a somewhat limited scale. The difficulties he had to encounter in executing the present work were almost insurmountable. The work, which is scrupulously correct in all its features, is entirely his own. The drawing, the engraving, the preparation of the colours, and even the making of the paper, for he could get no paper-maker to undertake it, are all the work of his own hands. Less than forty copies were ever completed. FRANKS (A. W.) On Recent Excavations and Discoveries on the Site of Ancient Carthage. It is supposed that no province of the Roman Empire contained a greater number of richly decorated Roman villas than did England, so much at least may be inferred from the splendid vestiges of Roman edifices and pavements in this country. This work was the result of twenty years' elaborate research. The plates exhibit most interesting and curious examples of art and magnificence. 1000 MARLBOROUGH GEMS. 2 vols., folio, a Series of more than 100 beautiful PROOFS engraved by BARTOLOZZI after CIPRIANI'S drawings, SOME IN TWO STATES; in old blue morocco extra, from the Duke of Lucca's Collection About 1780-91 10 10 Later impressions of these charming engravings were issued with a descriptive |
