FIRST EDITION. Though assigned to Fletcher on the title-page, we learn from the list of Shirley's plays appended to The Cardinal (first printed in Six New Plays,' 1653) that he was the author. But though we have now no reason to doubt that Shirley wrote the play, it was still claimed as Fletcher's in the second folio edition (1679) of Beaumont and Fletcher, and in several subsequent editions. RARE. The title informs us that "This Letter, although it was sent to Don Bernardin Mendoza, yet by good hap, the Copies thereof... were found in the chamber of one Richard Leigh a Seminarie Priest, who was lately executed for high treason committed in the time that the Spanish Armada was on the seas." The Certaine Advertisements' has a separate title and signatures. The total known Spanish losses is asserted to have been 32 ships and 10,185 men.

The Tradescant was the first cabinet of natural curiosities formed in England.
John Tradescant, who is supposed to have died in 1638, bequeathed the collection to
his son, who, in turn, left it to Elias Ashmole. These curiosities therefore form the
nucleus of the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford.

FIRST EDITION. Only two editions were printed, the second being merely a reprint of the first. It was written as an improvement of Gerard Leigh's Accidence of Armorie. Chaucer was evidently a favourite poet of the author, and is frequently quoted. Gower, Lydgate, and examples from contemporary literature are also cited in illustration of the text.

Mr. Hazlitt's collation is incorrect; it should be:, 4 leaves; A-C in eights; D-Hh in fours; A-C in eights; E, 2 leaves.

The engraved title was not issued with the copies dated 1701, no doubt owing to the Arms of James II forming portion of the design. A dedication to William III and Mary was inserted. The concluding address is said to have suggested to Dr. Johnson the form of the preface to his Dictionary.

This work holds a very important place in the select circle of books relating to

Freemasonry issued in the 17th century. Chapter 9 of Book III commences with the following paragraph: "I cannot but honour the Fellowship of the Masons because of its Antiquity; and the more, as being a member of that Society, called Free-masons. In being conversant amongst them I have observed the use of these severall Tools following, some whereof I have seen born in coats of Armour." After which follows the FIRST PRINTED DESCRIPTION of the tools used in Masonic circles.
