Early Renaissance Architecture in England: a Historical and Descriptive Account of the Tudor, Elizabethan and Jacobean Periods. Large Svo., with 100 plates, and over 200 illustrations in the text; cloth

1901

The scheme of the book is to take up the story of English architecture where existing text-books-such as Rickman, Sharpe, and Parker-leave it, namely, during the reign of Henry VII, and to carry it on briefly, but with sufficient detail, to the days of Elizabeth and James I, during whose reigns the land was covered with houses, skilfully designed, picturesque in appearance, and embellished with more or less splendour. The story stops just short of the advent of that great artist, Inigo Jones, under whose influence a new direction was imparted to architectural development, Grant. No complete or in any way adequate translation, either in verse or prose, of the greatest of Persian lyrists has before appeared; and this is somewhat remarkable, as Hafiz is considered, by those who are best qualified to judge, worthy to rank among the sovereign poets of the world. The reason was, however, sufficiently evident; the extreme difficulty of the task and the rarity of the peculiar qualifications requisite for the successful reproduction in English of so subtle and characteristic a work. Mr. John Payne, who is acknowledged to be without a rival in the art of translation and who was for some years engaged upon the undertaking, has in this work completed a metrical version of the collected poems (or Divan) of the Shirazi master.

The issue is limited to 750 copies, of which 75 were on large paper.

This attractive work contains in the Introduction an accurate description of the sea and land forces on a war footing of the Japanese and Russian nations, with interesting remarks on the advantages and disadvantages of both in the event of war. The work itself, embodying as it does the researches of such authorities as Colonel Younghusband, Major Gould-Adams, Mrs. Bishop and others, and containing much original and up-todate matter forms a work which should be of intense interest at this critical development of the Far Eastern Crisis.

1904

In a beautiful Surrey valley through which the little river Mole winds, there stands a house once famous as the refuge of some distinguished French Emigrés who, during the Reign of Terror, had escaped from the guillotine.

This house, known as Juniper Hall, stands behind its spreading cedars between the village of Mickleham and Burford Bridge. Within its sculptured drawing-room, a little more than a hundred years ago, a flow of brilliant talk resounded. There Madame de Staël poured forth her eloquence, and Talleyrand uttered his cynical jests; and there were heard the voices of Narbonne, of Matthieu de Montmorenci, of Jaucourt, of Lally-Tallendal, of Malouet, of the Princesse d'Henin, of Madame de Broglie, of Madame de la Châtre, of Girardin, of Madame de Beaumont, and of General d'Arblay.

Hincks (T.). A History of the British Hydroid Zoophytes. 2 vols., 8vo., with illustrations in the text and 68 plates; cloth; (pub. £2. 28) 1868 After quoting a passage from the book, a notice in the Athenæum says: "We have been led on by the beauty of this passage to give it a greater length than we intended. but it will well repay the time of its perusal, and gives a better notion of the tone of the work than any remarks of our own. We have to add that the illustrations which fill one volume, and the woodcuts which are intercalated with the text, are perfectly satisfactory, and that the work is thoroughly exhaustive of the subject." Hobson-Jobson. A Glossary of Colloquial Anglo-Indian Words and Phrases, and of Kindred Terms, Etymological, Historical, Geographical and Discursive. By Col. Henry Yule, and A. C. Burnell. New Edition, edited by WILLIAM CROOKE. 8vo., pp. xlviii, 1021; half red morocco, gilt top 1903 19

To explain away the difficulties presented by the many words and phrases in this substantial volume, or to facilitate the comprehension of their historical, geographical, or other meaning, the authors quote largely and frequently from those writers, British and foreign, modern and of several centuries ago, who throw any light on the subject. These quotations are in English, Latin, French, Portuguese, etc.

All those who have studied the pages of Hobson-Jobson have agreed in classing it as unique among similar works of reference, a volume which combines interest and amusement with instruction, in a manner which few other dictionaries, if any, have done.

Kokka (The). A Monthly Journal of Oriental Art. Nos. 1-163, folio, with upwards of 1000 collotype and chromoxylographic illustrations; in wrappers Tokyo, 1889-1903 32 10 "To lovers of Oriental Art the Kokka needs no special introduction. Ever since it was first issued in 1889, the Kokka has been welcomed by connoisseurs and all students of Eastern Art as an indispensable guide and work of reference. The Kokka is a veritable gallery of photographs of choice relics, for whatever is most captivating and appraised among the treasures of Oriental Art, in the collections of distinguished families and temples, and otherwise sealed to the public, enriches the pages of this journal. As to the intrinsic worth of the Kokka no better testimonial can be given than the fact that it was awarded a medal for specific merit at the Columbian Exhibition in Chicago, U.S.A., 1894, and a Grand Prix at the Paris Exhibition in 1900.

1904

Published by command of His Majesty, King Edward VII. The collection of armour and arms, remarkable for its extent and conspicuous amongst the rare treasures of the royal residence at Windsor, will be for the first time revealed. It is comprehensive in its range, and has been gathered together in earlier times from widely various sources by previous occupants of the throne, but most notably and largely by the Prince Consort, who was always in advance of his time in the higher appreciation of art, and who himself aided in the arrangement of the collection as it then existed. The examples were collected for their beauty of design, and many of them show the best work by the historic masters of the armourer's art. Much is fully shown in this collection that even in the finest arsenals of Europe is hardly represented. The series of court or "small" swords of the 18th century is, as an instance, in a national collection unparalleled. The collection of fire-arms is a very representative one, and many specimens are superb in their enrichments, while much of the armour and arms of an earlier date is matchless in quality and unrivalled in its historical associations.
