This work, probably the most popular of its kind ever published, became scarce in the ordinary course of things, but since a considerable number of copies were destroyed in the disastrous fire at the workshops of Messrs. Rivière and Son, copies are now almost impossible to obtain. "Lord Lilford's work only requires to be known to have as many admirers as there are lovers of birds, and as many subscribers as can afford it."-Sir Herbert Maxwell, Bart., M.P.

1896 The above work during its course of publication gained the highest praise in every quarter, from its combining three things of the highest importance but seldom found together-great scientific value, eminent readableness, and singular beauty of illustration. It can, in fact, be only compared with the great works of GOULD and SELBY, which being on so much larger a scale, from containing nearly life-size portraits of the birds themselves, are beyond the reach of most students of British ornithology, even with the aid of a great public library.

Coloured Figures of the Eggs of British Birds, with Descriptive Notices. Edited by R. Bowdler Sharpe. Roy. 8vo., with portraits, and 59 coloured plates containing many hundred figures; cloth (£3. 38 net) 1896 The books which have been written on British birds, from the first edition of Bewick in 1797 down to Saunders's Manual in 1889, are legion, but in very few of them are the eggs of British birds illustrated.

The first edition of Hewitson's British Oology was begun in 1831, and the last was finished in 1856. The plates were coloured by hand, and are most of them good; but all three editions have long been out of print, and, indeed, much of the letterpress is out of date.

There are a few inexpensive books on the eggs of British birds, but they contain only figures of the eggs of birds which breed within the British Islands, and these by no means satisfy the wants of the egg collector.

For one who is interested in birds there are a hundred persons who are interested in eggs. What the egg collector wants is a work in one volume, at a moderate price, with coloured illustrations of the egg of every British bird. The egg collector of to-day is very exacting. To satisfy him the chromos must be as good as love and money can make them. The letterpress, too, must be up to date in every respect, and, withal, not bulky. Into less than a page devoted to each of the 400 British birds must be condensed the following facts :-(1) the extent of the breeding range; (2) the date of the nesting season; (3) the situation in which the nest is placed; (4) the size and shape of the nest, and the materials of which it is composed; (5) the number of the eggs; (6) the variations of size and colour of the eggs; (7) the way to distinguish them from the eggs which resemble them most closely.

Seebohm's book fulfils all these requirements.
