See the bright monarch of the day
Shall I forsake that heavenly Friend
Shine forth, eternal Source of light
Shine, mighty God! on Britain shine,
Shine on our souls, eternal God
Should famine o'er the mourning field
Sing to the Lord in cheerful songs,
Sing to the Lord, ye distant lands
Soft are the fruitful showers that bring
Songs of immortal praise belong
Soon will your fleeting hours be past;
Sovereign Lord of light and glory
Stand up, my soul! shake off thy fears,
Still doth thy presence, Lord, pervade
Supreme and universal Light

Sweet fruits afflictions bring, like those
Sweet is the friendly voice which speaks
Sweet is the work, my God, my King!

T.

Teach me, oh teach me, Lord! thy way
That awful hour will soon appear
The day approaches, O my soul !
The earth and all the heavenly frame
The glories, Lord! thy works proclaim
The God of mercy will indulge
The gospel, like another sun,
The heavens declare thy glory, Lord!
The holy gospel we profess

The Lord-how tender is his love!
The Lord my pasture shall prepare
The Lord whose mercies never cease
The man who was crowned with thorns,
The mighty God who rules the spheres
The morning flowers display their sweets,
The morn of life, how fair and gay!
The rising morn the closing day
The short-lived day declines in haste;
The spacious firmament on high

The time draws near when thou, my soul
The uplifted eye and bended knee
There is a glorious world on high
There is a God,' all nature speaks
There is a land of pure delight
There is forgiveness, Lord! with thee,
These mortal joys, how soon they fade
This God is the God we adore,
Those happy realms of joy and peace,
Thou didst make the darksome night,
Though others confident and vain,
Thou Lord! in mercy wilt regard
Thrice happy men, who born from heaven,
Through all the various shifting scene
Through endless years thou art the same
Thus far the Lord hath led me on ;
Thus saith the first and great command,
Thy influence, mighty God! is felt
Thy kingdom, Lord! for ever stands
Thy mercies fill the earth, O Lord
Thy wisdom, power, and goodness Lord
Time, what an empty vapour 'tis,
'Tis by thy strength the mountains stand,
'Tis mercy calls,-let all their tribute bring
'Tis wisdom, mercy, love divine,
To God let fervent prayers arise
+ To God, of every good the Spring
To God, the great, the ever-bless'd,
To-morrow, Lord! is thine,
To thee let my first offering rise,

To thee, my heart, eternal King
To thee, O God! my days are known
To thee, O God! we homage pay,
To those bright realms I lift my eyes,

We'll praise our Maker with our breath;

When all thy mercies, O my God
When, as returns this solemn day
When blooming youth is snatch'd away
When gloomy thoughts and boding fears
* When in obedience to their Lord
When in the vale of lengthen'd years
When I survey life's varied scene,
When Jesus, our great Master, came..
When rising from the bed of death
When sickness shakes the languid frame
When sorrow sinks my spirts down,
When succours fail, and fears invade,
Wherefore should man. frail child of clay,
While here, as wand'ring sheep we stray,
While some in folly's pleasure roll
While sounds of war are heard around
While thee I seek, protecting Power!
While to the grave our friends are borne,
While, with ceaseless course, the sun
Why is my heart with grief oppress'd ?
Why should we waste in trifling cares
Why sinks my weak desponding mind?
With God my friend, the radiant sun,
With pleasing wonder, Lord! we view
*With pure delight the bosom glows,
With reverence let the saints appear
With warm delight and grateful joy
*With warm affection let us view,

Ye followers of the Prince of Peace!
Ye humble souls who seek the Lord!
Ye nations round the earth! rejoice
Ye sons of men! with joy record
Ye works of God! to him alone,
Ye that delight to serve the Lord
Ye tribes of Adam! join

HYMNS.

BOOK I.

HYMNS OF PRAISE.

1

E

1. L, M.

The One Living and True God.

TERNAL GOD! Almighty Cause

Of earth, and seas, and worlds unknown!
All things are subject to thy laws;
All things depend on thee alone.
2 Thy glorious being singly stands,
Of all within itself possess'd;
By none controll'd in thy commands,
And in thyself completely bless'd.
3 Worship to thee alone belongs;
Worship to thee alone we give ;

Thine be our hearts, and thine our songs,
And to thy glory may we live.

4 Spread thy great name through every land
In every heart erect thy thione ;
Subdue the world to thy command,
And reign unrivall'd, GoD, alone.

C

2. L. M.

All Nations called upon to praise God.

Y nations round the earth! rejoice
Before the LORD, your sov'reign King;
Serve him with cheerful heart and voice,
And his unrivall'd glories sing.

2 The LORD is GOD: 'tis he alone
Doth life and all its blessings give;
And still his guardian care we own,
And still upon his bounty live.

3 Enter his gates with songs of joy;
With praises in his courts appear;
And make it your divine employ
To pay your thanks and honours there.

4 For GOD, and he alone, is good;
His mercy is for ever sure;

1

His truth hath always firmly stood,

And shall from age to age endure.

3. P. M.

All Beings called upon to praise God.

E works of God! to him alone,

YE

From earth his footstool, heaven his throne,
Let all your praises rise;

Whose hand this beauteous fabric made,
Whose eye the finish'd whole survey'd,
And found it good and wise.

2 Ye sons of men! his praise display,
Who stamp'd his image on your clay,
And gave it power to move;
Where'er ye go, where'er ye dwell,
From age to age successive tell,
The wonders of his love.

3 Ye spirits of the good and just,
Who on his word of promise trust,
And daily upwards scar!
