He would not have me speak of him. And yet I cannot forbear saying a word of his life and character. The simple truth is his highest eulogy.

For twenty years you have had the benefit of his counsel and care; and, during all that time, how much evil has he silently prevented, how much good has he originated and carried out! These schoolhouses are his monuments. Our beautiful cemetery is his memo rial. And yonder edifice, whose finger points up wards to the sky, is inseparably connected with his spirit. No minister, no merchant, has filled such a space in the public eye, and made himself so indis pensable to us. Inwoven with the welfare of almost every family, he has laid us all under obligations which we can never repay.
