In the Bibliographical Dictionary, edited by Dr. Adam Clarke, appeared much curious information respecting Polyglot Bibles, a few copies of which were struck off separately by that learned divine, for private distribution. To this work, which forms the second part of the second volume of Mr. Horne's publication, the compiler of these pages has been greatly indebted. Course of Lectures, containing a Description and Systematic Arrangement of the several Branches of Divinity, accompanied with an Account both of the principal Authors, and of the Progress, which has been made at different Periods, in Theological Learning, by Herbert MARSH[Bishop of Peterborough]. Lond., 1809-23, 8vo, 7 pts., 31s. 6d. These profoundly learned and valuable lectures embrace every topic of biblical criticism and interpretation; and also the genuineness, authenticity, and credibility of the Scriptures; and are particularly valuable for the notices of the principal writers who have treated on these subjects. (1.) Lectures on the Criticism and Interpretation of the Bible, with two preliminary Lectures on Theological Study and Theological Arrangement: to which are added, two Lectures on the History of Biblical Interpretation, by H. MARSH, Bp. of Peterborough. Camb., 1828, 8vo, 12s. An enlarged edition of the first four parts of the Course of Lectures, reprinted London, 1838, 8vo, 14s. The two lectures on Biblical Interpretation, which were published separately, (price 2s. 6d.) contain notices of the principal writers on that subject. Marsh's Lectures, in the opinion of the Rev. E. Bickersteth, are deficient in evangelical views. 8. Illustrations of Biblical Literature, exhibiting the History and Fate of the Sacred Writings, from the earliest Period to the present Century, including Biographical Notices of Translators and other eminent Biblical Scholars, by James TOWNLEY, D.D. Lond., 1821, 8vo, 3 vols., publ. at 42s. These volumes afford a more comprehensive view of the progress of biblical translations, and of the literary and ecclesiastical history of the Holy Scriptures, than is to be found in any other work. It will be found suitable for general reading, and excellent for scholastic reference. (1) An Introduction to the Literary History of the Bible, by J. TOWNLEY, D.D. Lond., 1828, 12mo, 5s. This is a second edition of the Biblical Anecdotes publ. in 1813, and may be considered as an epitome of the illus trations of Biblical Literature. 9. Bibliotheca Biblica, a Select List of Books on Sacred Literature, with Notes, Biographical, Critical, and Bibliographical, by William ORME. Lond., 1824, 8vo, 14s. Orme's Bibliotheca is exceedingly valuable, and has furnished many of the remarks on books which are inserted in this manual. A convenient summary of biblical and ecclesiastical bibliography. 11. Bibliotheca Biblica Wurtembergensium Ducis, olim Lorkiana, auctore J. G. C. ADLER. Christiani, 1787, 4to, 30s. Mr. Horne observes this work is justly characterized by Bp. Marsh as a catalogue of great merit and utility, and contains notices of some versions and translators, which have escaped even the researches of Masch in his Bibliotheca Sacra. 12. Bibliotheca Sussexiana. A Descriptive Catalogue, accompanied by Historical and Biographical Notices of the MSS. and Printed Books contained in the Library of H. R. H. the Duke of Sussex, by T. G. PETTIGREW, F.R.S., &c. Lond., 1827, imper. 8vo, vol. 1 in 2 pts., 42s.; large paper, in small folio, 73s. 6d. The first part relates to manuscripts, the second to printed editions of the Holy Scriptures, viz. Polyglots of the Old and New Testaments and of detached portions thereof; Hebrew Bibles, Hebrew and Hebrew-Samaritan Pentateuchs, and portions of the Old Testament in Hebrew; Greek Bibles, Greek Pentateuch, and portions of the Old Testament in Greek; and Latin Bibles, and parts of the Old Testament in Latin. The work contains much minute and important bibliographical and other information. 13. Catalogue of the Ethiopic Biblical MSS. in the Royal Library of Paris, and the Library of the British and Foreign Bible Society; also some Account of those in the Vatican Library at Rome, with Remarks and Extracts: to which are added Specimens of Versions of the New Testament in the modern Languages of Abyssinia, and a Grammatical Analysis of a Chapter in the Amharic Dialect; with Fac-similes of an Ethiopic and an Amharic Manuscript, by T. P. PLATT, B.A. Lond., 1823, 4to, publ. at 15s. A work of considerable interest to Ethiopic and other Oriental scholars. 14. Catalogue of Editions of the Holy Scriptures, and other Biblical Works in the Library of the British and Foreign Bible Society. Lond., 1832, 8vo, 5s. Privately printed.
