The Feast of Pentecost (or Whit-Sunday) was a great festival among the Jews, in memory of the Laws being delivered on Mount Sinai at that time. The festival is of no less note in the Christian Church, from the descent of the Holy Ghost the very same day upon the Apostles, in the visible appearance of fiery cloven tongues. The effects of His descent upon the Apostles were, 1st, The power of speaking with other tongues, whereby they were enabled to publish the Christian religion all over the world. 2nd, The gift of inspiration, whereby they were fully instructed in all manner of heavenly truth. And, 3rd, They had the gift of miracles, which enabled them to prove to others those things which God had revealed to them.
