FIRST EDITION, a beautiful copy, in green morocco, gilt leaves

8vo

*** Of this well-known satire on Cardinal Wolsey and the Romish
Priesthood, there were two editions; the first, the present,
believed to have been printed at Worms, about the year 1526,
was, as we are informed by the author, in the preface to the
second edition," printed in the Cardinall's tyme," to whom
it is dedicated.

66

Go forthe lytell treatous nothynge afraide
To the Cardinal of Yorke dedicate."

The second edition was printed at Wesell, in 1546, and in the
stanzas from "The Author," preceding the poem, being " a
briefe Dialoge between two prestes servaunts, named Watkyn
and Jeffraye," the second line of the first, as given above, is
thus altered:

"To the Bysshoppes of Englade dedicate."

The last line of each of those stanzas is also thus altered:

"To open their iniquitie to euery kingdome."

It being in the first edition

"Ut inveniatur iniquitas eius ad odium."

The only difference in the contents of the two editions is, the
omission, in the second edition, of forty-six lines (commence-
ing on C vi), which refer to the divorce of Henry VIII and

[ocr errors][merged small][merged small][merged small]

Catherine of Arragon, and wherein the Princess Mary is also
mentioned. Also, that throughout the dialogue the allusion to
the Cardinal is omitted, the matter being altered as referring
to the Bishops, but without in any way moderating the bitter-
ness of the satire. The following passable relation to the
Princess Mary was omitted in the subsequent edition.
Jef." Ye a Princes, whom to descryve
