Be Thou our guardian while we sleep,
Thy gracious watch around us keep;
Thy heav'nly love in us instil,
And stop all avenues of ill.

Praise God, &c.

5.

Evensong Hymn.

(L. M.)

BLESS ye the Lord, the God of peace;
He giveth songs, bids sorrows cease;
In his salvation we will joy,
For He shall our last foe destroy.

In Him is everlasting rest,

And they who trust in Him are blest :
Them will He own when all shall meet
Before his dreadful judgment-seat.
His grace and truth on us have beam'd;
His mercy hath our souls redeem'd :
Let us entreat, through his dear Son,
Forgiveness for the ill we've done.

A Closing Hymn.

(C. M.)

WE thank Thee, Lord, for all thy grace
Vouchsafed to us this day;

Our faults in word or deed, O cleanse,

For Jesus' sake away.

What we have read, what we have heard,

Let it be fixed within;

And keep us back, O blessed Lord,

From every kind of sin.

O set our hearts and minds on heaven,
That we may love thy will;
And guard us, till we meet again,
From danger and from ill.

FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT.

(The Sunday nearest to 30th Nov.)

Epistle, Rom. xiii. 8-14. Gospel, Matt. xxi. 1—13. Evensong, Isaiah ii.

Matins, Isaiah i.

7. The Coming of the lowly Jesus. (7's.)

ONCE there came a little child,
In a stable was he born;

Poor and feeble, weak and mild,
He was looked upon with scorn.

Yet that babe was God most high,
Who both made and keeps us all :
And he came that He might die,
For the fruits of Adam's fall.

Neither was there other way
Pardon for our sins to give,
But that Christ himself should pay
His own life that we might live.

Praise the Son of God, who came
As a child-the Son of man-
Took our sorrows, bare our shame,--
Loved us ere the world began.

Messiah's Advent.

He was in the world, and the world was made by Him,

And the world knew Him not.

He came unto his own, and his own received Him not.

But as many as received Him,

To them gave He power to become the sons of God,

Even to them that believe on his name:
Which were born, not of blood,

Nor of the will of the flesh, but of God.
And the Word was made flesh,

And dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory,

The glory as of the only begotten of the Father,

Full of grace and truth. Amen.—John i. 10.

SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT.

Epist. Rom. xv. 4-13. Gosp. Luke xxi. 25-33. Matins, Isaiah v. Evensong, Isaiah xxiv.

9. The Written Word of God. (7's.)

As the rain comes down from heaven,
Causing earth to bring forth food,—
As the snow, in white clouds driven,
Comes from God to us for good.

So his holy, precious Word,
All his purpose doth fulfil;
Be it read, or be it heard,
It accomplishes his will.

In his ways it is the Guide
To his fold the flock to lead,
That in Christ they may abide,
And on him their souls may feed.

Watch lest ye, untaught, unhealed,
Hear that Word of God in vain ;
As a barren, blighted field,
Thankless drinks the gracious rain.

11. The constant Means of Grace. (L.M.)
WE'VE passed another Sabbath-day,
And heard of Jesus and of heaven;
We thank Thee for thy Word, and pray
That this day's sins may be forgiven.
Oft while we kneeled before thy throne,
Our hearts forgot that Thou wert there;
And oft we sang with voice alone,
And prayed with only lips of

Forgive our inattention, Lord,

prayer.

Our looks and thoughts that went astray; Forgive our carelessness abroad,

At home, our idleness or play.

May all we heard and understood
Be well remembered through the week,
And help to make us wise and good,
More humble, diligent, and meek.

So when our lives are finished here,
And days and Sabbaths shall be o'er,
May we at thy right hand appear,
To praise and love Thee evermore.

12. The Saviour's gracious Words.
THE Spirit of the Lord God is upon me;
Because the Lord hath anointed me
