When at last you have to die,
And be judged by God on high,
You must answer for the times

You have heard in vain those chimes.

36.

Profession will not save.

By their fruits ye shall know them.
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord,
Lord!

Shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, But he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Many will say unto me in that day, Lord,
Lord!

Have we not prophesied in thy name,
And in thy name have cast out devils,
And in thy name done many wonderful
works?

And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you,

Depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Matt. vii. 20.

SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY.

Epistle, Rom. xii. 6-16.

Matins, Isaiah li.

Gospel, John ii. 1–11.
Evensong, Isaiah liii.

37.

Morning Praises.

(C.M.)

WE'VE spent the hours of silent night

In sleep and quiet rest;

And joyful comes the cheerful light
That riseth from the east.

Raise ye your voice, and cheer your heart,
Now let us pray and sing;
Let each among us bear a part
To praise our heavenly King.

And ye whom cares awake may keep,
Or sicknesses oppress,

Or secret sorrows break your sleep,
Or pain or grief distress ;-

Still sing your psalm, though sad it be;
That all with one accord,

In thankfulness for mercies free
May praise the living Lord!

38.

The Prince of Peace.

PEACE I leave with you,

My peace I give unto you:

Not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.-John xiv. 27.

THIRD SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY.

Epistle, Rom. xii. 16-21. Gospel, Matt. viii. 1—13.
Matins, Isaiah lv.
Evensong, Isaiah lvi.

39.

Lean only upon God.

QUIET, Lord, my froward heart,
Make me teachable and mild;
Humble, upright, pure from art,
Simple as a weaned child;

(7's.)

From distrust and envy free,
Pleased with that which pleaseth Thee!

What Thou dost to-day provide,
Let me thankfully receive;
What to-morrow may betide,
Calmly to thy wisdom leave:
"Tis enough that Thou wilt care,—
Why should I the burden bear?

As an infant babe relies

On a care beyond its own;
Knows 'tis neither strong nor wise,
Fears to take a step alone,-
So let me on Thee depend

As my Father, Guide, and Friend!

40.

The way of Peace on Earth.

Nor rendering railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing;

For he that will love life and see good days,
Let him refrain his tongue from evil,
And his lips that they speak no guile :
Let him eschew evil, and do good;
Let him seek peace, and ensue it.

For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous,

And his ears are open unto their prayers: But the face of the Lord

Is against them that do evil.-1. Peter iii. 9.

FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY.

Epistle, Rom. xiii. 1-7. Gospel, Matt. viii. 23-34.
Matins, Isaiah lvii.
Evensong, Isaiah lviii.

41.

The never-failing Friend.

O GOD! how glorious is thy name,
Thy goodness always new,

To-day and yesterday the same,
How faithful, just, and true!

(C. M.)

No change of mind in Christ is known,
A never-failing Friend!
Where'er his tender love is shown
He loves unto the end!

He well remembers we are clay,
A bruised reed-a leaf;
He comforts us, and wipes away
Our tears of pain and grief.

O give us safety, strength, and rest,
In Thee, and Thee alone;
So shall we dwell among the blest
Before thy glorious throne.

42. There is strength for the tempted.

LET him that thinketh he standeth
Take heed lest he fall.

There hath no temptation taken you
But such as is common to man.

But God is faithful;

Who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able;

[blocks in formation]

LITTLE birds within their nest,
Feel no cold, and fear no ill,

(7's.)

Their kind mother's downy breast,
Is their guard and comfort still.
So you'll find-if you have sought-
Peace within your Saviour's arms:
Unto him you have been brought,
He will keep you safe from harms.
This cold world will chill your hearts,
Sin will rob your souls of peace;
Choose, O choose, in Christ your parts,
He will make your dangers cease.
He will feed you day by day,
Comfort when you are distrest;
He is never far away,

And his bosom is your rest.

44. The Lord is the Strength of our Heart.

TRUST ye in the Lord for ever,

For in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.
