PREFACE.

THE present Manual is much more than a Hymn and Chant Book in the usual meaning of the name.

It contains about 332 Hymns (original and selected) and Chants, arranged according to the Collects, Catechism, and Services of the Church of England. Of these, the Chants consist of 149 short select passages of Scripture on all important subjects, printed in their natural poetry, or sentences (as in the Pytchley Hymn-book of 1843), and suitable either for chanting, or for storing the memory with truth in the very words of Scripture. References the Scriptures appointed for the Collects are added. A few short prayers for children or schools, an explanation of some difficult words in the Bible and Prayer-book, and a few simple practical Rules for Chanting, complete the volume, which yet is offered at the usual price of such collections. The headings will all be found instructive.

The Hymns (177, besides Doxologies) are partly such as are well known, and partly simpler versions of others scarcely suited, or seldom presented, to children. Those which cannot be recognized must bear the character of original. Every hymn is believed to be the composition of a member of the Church of England. The Scripture passages will be found occasionally shortened by the omission of less prominent parts, or lengthened by the addition of corresponding verses from other places. A similar volume of simple poetry for week-day use, and

another of Psalm-tunes and Chants, form part of
the plan proposed by the Compiler.

This Manual embraces all the subjects in the
Catechism, and is suited to any stage of youth; it
aims at imbuing children's minds with the truths of
God's Word, and the principles of the Thirty-Nine
Articles. The Compiler hopes for the support of all
who love the Bible and the Church, in his attempt
to provide for the young a purely Church of Eng-
land Manual, which may habituate them in their
daily lives to realize their Bible and Prayer-book,
and feel their privilege and responsibility as children
of the Church of England. He humbly commends
it to the blessing of Him who said, "Suffer the little
children to come unto me, and forbid them not."
