His Majefty to a peaceable and quiet Poffeffion of the Throne, and thereby dif appointing the Designs of the Pretender and all his Adherents. And certainly, if any Nation ever had Reafon to be thankful, we have upon this Occafion, We see our felves in Peace and Quiet; our Laws, our Liberty and Property preferved; our Excellent Church and Holy Religion fecured; and which of thofe could we expect to have feen, had we been deprived of the Proteftant Succeffion? And what makes the Bleffing the more valuable, is, that tho' we thought it worth venturing all for, and had Reafon enough to apprehend it might have come to that; Yet God was pleased to fend it us without Blood and Slaughter, even without a Struggle, and in profound Peace. What ftill farther enhances the Bleffing, is, that we have all the Human Views that it may be durable and lasting; that by a numerous Royal Progeny it may be tranfmitted Safe to all Pofterity. We have not only a Proteftant King, but Children, and Childrens Children that are Proteftants; which we never had at Home before, and never but once Abroad, and that in this very Family by the Princess Elizabeth, Daughter to King James the Firft, and Grandmother to our prefent King: But with this Difference, that it was a Family then in Diftrefs and Perfecution for the Proteftant Caufe, it is a Family now at the Head, of the Proteftant Intereft in Europe. Perhaps, added the Bishop, there is no Nation in the World has more Reafon to be thankful to GOD, or has received more Advantages

blifh'd by Law is happily reform'd from the
Idolatry and Supperftions, and Tyranny of
Popery; and we have fome Advantages in
our Conftitution above all other Reformed
Churches; our Civil Government is mild and
gentle; the Crown has many Prerogatives to
protect us and do us Good, but none to in-
vade our Liberty and Property: Our Country
is rich and fruitful, and abounding with great
Plenty; and whatever we want at Home, is
by our Trade brought to us from Abroad.
All Sorts of Learning and Arts flourish a-
mong us; we are by our Situation, being an
Iland, freed from the Incurfions of Enemies,
and cannot easily be invaded; which gives a
great Security to all our other Bleffings. Thefe
Things, one would think, were enough to make
a happy People; but after all, the Matter
has hitherto been otherwife, at least for a great
while- We can many of us remember when
we had a Popish Prince upon the Throne,
and how full of Frights and Fears, we then
justly were, and how all true Sons of the
Church groan'd for a Deliverance: GOD
was pleafed to fend us One, to the almost
univerfal Foy of the Nation; but that was
Scarce Jettled before we fell into Difcontents,
that lafted through the Reign of our Great
Deliverer: Which made Him and Us un-
eafy at Home, encourag'd the Common Ene-
my, and loft almost all the good Effects of
vaft Sums of Maney, and the Lives of many
brave Men, Spent in a War for the Defence
of the Liberty of Europe. The next Reign
began with a War for the fame glorious Pur-
pofe, and was carried on with fuch an
