Lord, I believe, help Thou my unbelief.

[blocks in formation]

When ends life's transient dream,
When death's cold, sullen stream

Shall o'er me roll;

Blest Saviour, then in love,

Fear and distrust remove;

Oh, bear me safe above,

A ransomed soul!

RAY PALMER, A.d. 1830.

(Church Hymnal, No. 345.)

Wednesday.

SUBJECT-HOLINESS.

Meditation.

Leviticus, rir. 2.

"Ye shall be holy; for I the Lord your God am

Holy."

HOW infinitely holy is my God! He is of purer eyes than to behold iniquity. He chargeth even His angels with folly. How hateful, then, must the smallest sin be in His sight! When He looks down upon this world of ours, how sad a picture does He behold-a world "lying in wickedness". -a world for the most part in rebellion against Him! And when He looks upon me, alas, alas, how much sin does He see in me-not only in my out

ward life, but in my inner heart! And yet He bears with me with much longsuffering. He calls me to Himself. He invites me to come to Him. He "draws me with the cords of a man, with bands of love." He has provided a Redeemer for me, to save me from the condemnation I deserve, and to be the ransom for my lost soul.

How infinitely holy too is Jesus, my Saviour! I will think of His spotless,

blameless life.

has set me an low His steps.

He

He knew no sin. example, that I might folHow meekly did He bear the scoffs of His enemies! How patiently did He endure pain! How cheerfully did He accept the Cross! And in all this, what an example has He set me!

How holy too is that blessed Spirit, who dwells with the pure in heart! There is not a holy thought passing through my mind, or a holy desire springing up with

in me, that He has not planted there. He is "the Spirit of holiness."

And Heaven is a holy place. It is the abode of God Himself. When I reach that place, my companions there will be the saints of God; my employments there will be holy. Who, then, is fit for admission there? Only those who are washed in the blood of the Lamb, and sanctified by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. (Rev. vii. 14.)

Ought I not therefore to be a holy person? Must I not learn to be holy here, if I would be happy both here and hereafter? I do indeed need the wedding garment to clothe my nakedness; else I can neither be a fit guest at the Lord's Supper on earth, or be admitted into His presence in heaven.
