THE INSTITUTION OF THE LORD'S SUPPER. 5

:

I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves for I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you."

1 Cor. x. 16.

"The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we being many are one bread, and one body for we are all partakers of that one bread."

1 Cor. xi. 23-29.

For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood; this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that

cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

The teaching of the Church as regards this Sacrament is contained in the Catechism as follows:

Why was the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper ordained?

Answer. For the continual remembrance of the sacrifice of the death of Christ, and of the benefits which we receive thereby.

What is the outward part or sign of the Lord's Supper?

Answer. Bread and Wine, which the Lord hath commanded to be received. What is the inward part, or thing signified ?

Answer. The Body and Blood of Christ, which are spiritually taken and received by the faithful in the Lord's Supper.

What are the benefits whereof we are partakers thereby?

Answer. The strengthening and refreshing of our souls by the Body and Blood of Christ, as our bodies are by the Bread and Wine.

What is required of those who come to the Lord's Supper?

themselves,

Answer. То examine whether they repent them truly of their former sins, stedfastly purposing to lead a new life; have a lively faith in God's mercy through Christ, with a thankful remembrance of his death; and be in charity with all men.

Thus did the Blessed Lord appoint this Heavenly Feast and thus does the Holy Scripture and the Church teach regarding it.

Now, in order to help you towards a right receiving of this Holy Ordinance, a Course of Preparation has been compiled. But remember that the mere formal use of this, or of any other Book, will profit you nothing. You may

punctually read each Meditation, and repeat every Prayer, word for word; and. yet, if your heart is not in the matter, you will derive no profit. For it is God alone who can tune your heart and set it in order. The preparation of the heart. is from Him.
