The natural dispositions of our hearts.

MAR. VII. 21-23. GA. v. 19-21.

21 For from within, out of the | edness, deceit, lasciviousness, an Reart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22 Thefts, covetousness, wick

evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

23 All these evil things come

Kon within, and defile the man.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

WHAT is meant by within? What is the heart? ANs. chooses and refuses.

21 Envyings, murders, drunk enness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

That which loves and hates,

What do they love, whose hearts have not been renewed Job 15: 16. 20: 12. Ho. 4: 8.

What are evil thoughts?

Where do filthy thoughts come from?

If children had pure hearts, would they ever speak filthy words?

When you hear children speak indecent words, what does it show you of their hearts?

Where do murders come from?

How can any one have murder in his heart, if he does not kill? 1 Jn. 3: 15.

Where does covetousness come from?

What are all mankind, by nature, inclined to do towards one another?

Where does wickedness come from?

Why are children inclined to mischief?

Does it do them any good?

Where does foolishness come from?

Where do all these evil things come from?

And what do they do?

If all these things come from the heart, how wicked must it be? Je. 17: 9, 1. c.

What is meant by the flesh? Jn. 3: 6.

What are the works of the flesh, to which we are all in clined?

What is it natural for people to love more than they love God?

Is it natural for people to hate one another?

Is it natural for people to quarrel?

Would children ever hate one another, if they had not wicked hearts?

Would brothers and sisters quarrel, if they had not wicked hearts?

Would people feel angry, if they had not wicked hearts? Why do not people kill every body that they hate? Ps

76: 10.

When God gives up sinners to themselves, what do they > come to? Ro. 1: 24-32.

What would you come to, if he should give you up to do as you please?

How then ought you to feel towards him for restraining you by his grace?

How ought you to feel in regard to yourself, when you see others falling into these sins? 1 Co. 4: 7. 15: 10, f. c. How should you feel in regard to them? Lu. 19: 41, 42. How ought you to feel, on account of the sin they com mit against God? Ps. 119: 136. Eze. 9: 4.

Can those who indulge such dispositions go to heaven? v. 21.

Have all, by nature, such dispositions? Ep. 2: 1–3.
Can any be saved, then, unless their hearts are changed?
Who can change our hearts? Ps. 51: 10.

LESSON XLI.

The Dispositions of the renewed Heart.
GA. V. 22-24.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: a

gainst such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ's
have crucified the flesh, with the
affections and lusts.

WHEN people become pious, who is it that changes their hearts? Jn. 3; 5, 6.

What are the good dispositions called, which the Holy Spirit produces in the hearts of Christians? Jn. 15: 4, 5. Ro. 6: 22.

How can you tell whether a tree is good or bad? Mat. 7: 16-18.

If the natural heart is full of sin, can any of its feeli1gs or dispositions be good?

What kind of dispositions will the Holy Spirit produce, when he changes the heart? vs. 22, 23.

If you loved God with your whole heart, could you be guilty of idolatry?

Could you take his holy name in vain?
Could you break his holy Sabbath?

Could you disobey him in any thing else?

If you loved your parents as you ought, would you diso bey them?

If people loved one another as they love themselves,

would they ever kill one another, or do one another any harm?

Can you indulge ill will towards a person that you love? Could you steal from a person that you love as you do yourself?

Would you take the advantage of him in any other way? Would any one try to injure the character of a person he loves?

What brings joy to those whose hearts have been changed? 1 Pe. 1: 3-8.

How does the Holy Spirit give us peace with God? Ro. 5: 1-5.

If the Holy Spirit gives us a peaceable spirit, shall we be inclined to quarrel with others? Ja. 3: 17.

What is long-suffering? ANs. It is bearing long with injuries received from others.

How will the Holy Spirit lead us to feel towards those that seek to injure us? Mat. 5: 44.

What is gentleness? ANs. It is a mild and tender spirit towards others.

If you exercise this spirit, will you be very likely to make others angry with you? Pr. 15: 1.

What is goodness? ANS. Kind and benevolent feelings -a disposition to do good to all.

If you have this disposition, will you ever envy others because they have good things which you have not? What is faith? He. 11: 1, 6.

Whose gift is faith? Ep. 2: 8.

What is meekness? ANs. It is a state of mind not easily provoked to anger.

Would a meek person indulge the evil dispositions described in the last lesson ?

What blessing is promised to the meek? Mat. 5: 5.
In what do the meek delight themselves? Ps. 37: 11.
What is temperance? ANs. It is to be moderate in al
our desires and indulgences.

What rule must you follow to avoid the danger of be coming a drunkard? ANs. To drink no intoxicating quors.
