FIRST SUMMER MEETING,

AT STOURHEAD, ZEALS AND MERE,
June 10th, 1926.

At the Annual Meeting of the Field Club in May, when the General Strike was running its course, and it was not known how long it would last, it was deemed advisable not to attempt to have a June Meeting this year, but that we should content ourselves with the three Meetings in July, August and September.

As, however, the General Strike proved to be of short duration, it was felt that after all a June Meeting might be held, and consequently arrangements were made to carry out the programme which was cancelled last year owing to the lamented death of our President.

That this was acceptable is shown by the fact that about a hundred members with their friends took part in the excursion to the district of Mere on Thursday, June 10th. No use was made of the reduced train service, but there were motor coaches from Bournemouth and Weymouth in addition to a large number of private cars. Mr. Alfred Pope, F.S.A., the newlyelected President of the Club was supported by Mr. Vere L. Oliver, F.S.A. (Hon. Sec.), and Colonel R. H. Cunnington (Hon. Treas.) The Members met at Stourhead shortly before

noon.

The beautiful Estate of Stourhead was purchased in 1720 from the then Lord Stourton by Henry Hoare, the well-known London banker, in whose descendant it is now vested. The old medieval court of the Stourtons having been demolished,
