1485 SAONA.

J. Waley, 1557 RHETORICA NOVA LAURENCII GULIELMI DE SAONA ORDINIS MINORUM COMPILATA IN ALMA UNIVERSITATE CANTABRIGIA ANN. 1478

IMPRESSA APUD VILLAM Sti. Albani, MCCCCLXXX
gothic letter, a Fine and perfect COPY OF ONE OF THE Earliest
VOLUMES PRINTED IN ENGLAND, AND CONSIDERED THE FIRST
WORK FROM THE PRESS ESTABLISHED IN THE MAGNIFICENT
ABBEY OF SAINT ALBANS

OF THE MOST EXCESSIVE RARITY AND INTEREST, NOT MORE THAN
FOUR OTHER Copies being now known to exist, viz. I. A
Duplicate of the present in the Bodleian; II. In the
Royal Collection; III. In the Spencer Collection; and IV.
The copy said to have been presented by Arbp. Parker to
Corpus Christi College, Cambridge

Dr. Middleton, in his Dissertation concerning the Origin of
Printing in England, published in 1735, states on page 13,
that "a copy of this book was once in Bp. More's Library,
but it is now lost or stolen from that noble collection." The
learned Doctor probably erred in thus stating it to have been
taken from Bp. More's collection instead of Bp. Tanner's.
It appears to have been only mislaid. Lowndes, Dibdin,
Brunet and others in describing the volume state that the
first leaf is wholly blank such is not the fact, leaf i
commencing with the word "Fratris," unmarked by a sig-
nature. From the circumstance of Dr. Dibdin so positively
stating that Lord Spencer's copy commences on A ii (not
marked), and that sheet being composed of 8 leaves, counting
(according to Dr. Dibdin) A i as a blank, it might be inferred
that A ii is really wanting in Lord Spencer's copy; the leaf
marked as A ii in the present might be missing without
suspicion of defect; Dr. Dibdin's collation being vague. The
present copy is without covers: only one remove from utter
destruction, and it is fortunate for amateurs of early English
typography that its apparently impending fate has been
arrested for so long a period. Its next proprietor will
probably bestow as elegant a new dress upon the volume, as
will make it a fit companion for others of like rarity.
