In the following Dialogue is laid down the ancient doctrine of the Church of England, as preached by our glorious Reformers, and still continued in our Articles and Homilies. It is presumed, that a work of this kind may be acceptable to every member of our community, that their understandings may be rightly informed, their minds immovably fixed in the doctrine they profess; and that a plain and artless display of the truth may be a lasting preservative from the errors of those teachers, who falsely style themselves of the Church, and set themselves up for their best friends, but are in fact, her greatest enemies. Impartiality is observed, by giving the arguments on both sides their due force, whilst a multiplicity of unnecessary words is purposely avoided. Notions, modes, and party, are not espoused, as the intent is to plead for religion, not opinion; to preach Christ, not ourselves. Attempts of this kind have been made before, |
