*The dedication to the Earl of Essex gave great offence to Queen
Elizabeth, who employed Sir Francis Bacon to search whether
the author of the book could not be punished for treason. The
witty answer of Lord Bacon of finding "no treasan but plenty of
felony" (Plagiarisms from Tacitus) is recorded by Mr. Smith in
a MS. note, taken from the Banquet of Jests, printed in 1657.
This edition, which was suppressed, is very scarce: Hibbert's
copy sold for £6. 6s.
