2. Oh! may I always ready stand,
With my lamp burning in my hand;
May I in sight of heaven rejoice,
Whene'er I hear the Bridegroom's voice.

3. Blest Jesu, Thou on heaven intent,
Whole nights hast in devotion spent ;
But I, frail creature, soon am tir'd,
And all my zeal is soon expir'd.

4. Shine on me, Lord, new life impart,
Fresh ardours kindle in my heart;
One ray of thy all quick'ning light,
Dispels the sloth and clouds of night.

HYMN 20.

"All my springs are in thee." Ps. lxxxvii. 7.

1. OBJECT of my first desire,

Jesus crucified for me,

All to happiness aspire,

Only to be found in Thee:
Thee to praise, and Thee to know,
Constitutes our bliss below;

Thee to see, and Thee to love,
Constitutes our bliss above.

2. Lord, it is not life to live,

If thy presence Thou deny; Lord, if Thou thy presence give, 'Tis no longer death to die :

Source and Giver of repose,
Singly from thy smile it flows;
Peace and happiness are thine,
Mine they are, if Thou art mine.

3. Whilst I see thy love to me,

Ev'ry object teems with joy ;
Here, oh, may I walk with Thee,
Then in thy glad presence die!

Let me but Thyself possess,
Surest pledge of happiness!
Real bliss I then shall prove;

Heav'n below, and heav'n above.

HYMN 21.

"A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel." LUKE ii. 32.

1. O'ER the realms of pagan darkness, Let the eye of pity gaze;

See the kindreds of the people,

Lost in sin's bewildering maze :
Darkness brooding

On the face of all the earth.

2. Light of them that sit in darkness!

Rise and shine, thy blessings bring:

Light to lighten all the Gentiles !

Rise with healing in thy wing:

To thy brightness

Let all kings and nations come.

3. May the heathen, now adoring
Idol gods of wood and stone,
Come, and, worshipping before Him,
Serve the living God alone:
Let thy glory

Fill the earth as floods the sea.

4. Thou, to whom all power is given,
Speak the word; at thy command,
Let the company of preachers

Spread thy name from land to land:
Lord, be with them,

Alway to the end of time.

(Helmsley.)

HYMN 22.

COTTERILL.

A new heart will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you." EZEKIEL Xxxxvi. 26.

1. O GOD of power, eternal Lord,
How sov'reign is thy hand!

All nature rose at thy dread word,
And moves at thy command.

2. With steady course the shining sun
Keeps his appointed way;

And all the hours obedient run

The circle of the day.

3. But, ah! how far my spirit flies,
And wanders from my God!

My soul forgets the heavenly prize,
And treads the downward road.

4. Lord, thy renewing grace bestow,
Conform my heart to thine;

Melt down my will, and let it flow,
And take the mould divine.

HYMN 23.

"Enoch walked with God." GEN. v. 24.

1. Oн for a closer walk with God,
A calm and heavenly frame,
A light to shine upon the road
That leads me to the Lamb!

2. Where is the blessedness I knew,
When first I saw the Lord?
Where is the soul refreshing view
Of Jesus, and his word?

3. What peaceful hours I once enjoy'd!
How sweet their memory still!
But they have left an aching void
The world can never fill.

4. Return, O holy Dove! return,
Sweet messenger of rest!

I hate the sins that made Thee mourn,
And drove Thee from my breast.

5. The dearest idol I have known,
Whate'er that idol be,

Help me to tear it from thy throne,
And worship only Thee.

6. So shall my walk be close with God,
Calm and serene my frame;

So purer light shall mark the road
That leads me to the Lamb.

HYMN 24.

"Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth." COL. iii. 2.

1. OH, from the world's vile slavery, Almighty Saviour, set me free:

And let my treasure be above;

Be there my thoughts, be there my love.

2. But oft, alas! too well I know,

My thoughts, my love, are fix'd below:
In many a lifeless prayer I find

The heart unmov'd, the absent mind.

3. Oh, what that frozen heart can move
That melts not at a Saviour's love?
What can that sluggish spirit raise
That will not sing a Saviour's praise?
