HYMN 31.

From Psalm xxiii.

1. THE Lord my pasture shall prepare,
And feed me with a shepherd's care;
His presence shall my wants supply,
And guard me with a watchful eye;
My noon day walks He shall attend,
And all my midnight hours defend.

2. When in the sultry glebe I faint,
Or on the thirsty mountain pant:
To fertile vales and dewy meads,
My weary wand'ring steps He leads,
Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow,
Amid the verdant landscape flow.

3. Though in the paths of death I tread
With gloomy horrors overspread,
My stedfast heart shall fear no ill,
For Thou, O Lord, art with me still;
Thy friendly crook shall give me aid,
And guide me through the dreadful shade.

4. Though in a bare and rugged way,
Through devious lonely wilds I stray,
Thy bounty shall my pains beguile,
The barren wilderness shall smile

With sudden leaves and herbage crown'd;
And streams shall murmur all around.

ADDISON.

HYMN 32.

"Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee." JOHN xxi. 17.

1. THEE Will I love, my strength and tower,
Thee will I love, my joy and crown;

Thee will I love with all my power,
With all my heart, and Thee alone;
Thee will I love, till that pure fire
Fill my whole soul with warm desire.
2. In darkness willingly I stray'd,

I sought Thee not, from Thee I rov'd;
For wide my wandering thoughts were spread,
Thy creatures more than Thee I lov'd :
And now, if more at length I see,

'Tis through thy light, and comes from Thee.

3. Thee will I love, my joy, my crown,
Thee will I love, my Lord, my God,
Thee will I love, though all may frown,
And thorns and briers perplex my road;
Yea, when my flesh and heart decay,
Thee shall I love in endless day.

HYMN 33.

"Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." ROM. viii. 39.

1. THOU God of boundless love, whose height,

Whose depth unfathom'd no man knows, I see from far thy glorious light,

Deeply I sigh for thy repose:

My heart is pain'd, nor can it be
At rest, till I find rest in Thee.

2. Is there a thing beneath the sun,

That strives with Thee my heart to share?
Ah! tear it thence, and reign alone,

The Lord of every feeling there!
Then shall my heart of earth be free,
When it has found repose in Thee.

3. Oh! hide this self from me, that I
No more, but Christ in me may live!
My vile affections crucify,

Nor let one hateful lust survive.
In all things nothing may I see,
Nothing desire, or seek, but Thee.

HYMN 34.

"Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek." Ps. xxvii. 8.

1. THOU refuge of the weary

soul !

On Thee when sorrows rise;

On Thee, when waves of trouble roll,
My fainting hope relies.

2. To Thee, I tell each rising grief,
For Thou alone canst heal;

Thy word can bring a sweet relief
For ev'ry pain I feel.

3. Hast Thou not bid me seek thy face? And shall I seek in vain ?

And can the ear of thy free grace
Be deaf when I complain?

4. No; still the ear of thy free grace
Waits on the mourner's pray'r;
Oh! may I ever find access

To breathe my sorrows there.

5. Thy mercy seat is open still;
Here let my soul retreat;

With humble hope attend thy will,
And wait beneath thy feet.

HYMN 35.

"Lovest thou me?" JOHN xxi. 15.

1. "Tis a point I long to know,

Oft it causes anxious thought;
Do I love Thee, Lord, or no?
Am I thine, or am I not?

2. Could my heart so hard remain, Prayer a task so irksome prove, Every trifle give me pain,

If I knew my Saviour's love?

3. When I turn my eyes within,

All is dark, and vain, and wild;
Fill'd with unbelief and sin,

Can I deem myself thy child?

4. If I pray, or hear, or read,

Sin is mix'd with all I do ;
Ye that love the Lord indeed,
Tell me, is it thus with you?

5. Yet I mourn my stubborn will,
Find my sin a grief and thrall;
Should I grieve for what I feel,
If I did not love at all?

6. Could I joy his saints to meet,

Choose the ways I once abhorr'd,
Find, at times, the promise sweet,
If I did not love the Lord?

7. Lord, decide the doubtful case :
Thou who art thy people's sun,
Shine upon thy work of

If it be indeed begun.

grace,

8. Let me love Thee more and more,

If I love at all, I pray;

If I have not loved before,

Help me to begin to day.

HYMN 36.

"Whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth." HEB. xii. 6.

1. 'Tis my happiness below

Not to live without the cross;
But the Saviour's power to know,
Sanctifying every loss.
