The 27 essays of this ambitious volume cover a number of places, shrines, saint's cults, and sacred architecture, yet they maintain a coherent focus through the central theme of pilgrimage. The papers are grouped into 7 sections, on topics that include the pilgrim's real and imagined journey, iconography, the symbol of Jerusalem, souvenirs, politics, and cult practice.
