The gracious light and heat:
Its truths upon the nations rise;
They rise-but never set.

As makes a world of darkness shine
With beams of heavenly day.

The steps of him I love,
Till glory breaks upon my view
In brighter worlds above.

HOW precious is the book divine,
By inspiration given!

Bright as a lamp, its doctrines shine,
To guide our souls to heaven.

2 It sweetly cheers our drooping hearts,
In this dark vale of tears;

mf Life, light, and joy it still imparts,

Of life, shall guide our way;

Till we behold the clearer light

Of an eternal day.

The Bible suited to the Wants of Mankind.

FATHER of mercies, in thy word

What endless glory shines!

Forever be thy name adored

For these celestial lines!

2 Here may the wretched sons of want
Exhaustless riches find;
Riches, above what earth can grant,
And lasting as the mind.

3 Here springs of consolation rise
To cheer the fainting mind;
And thirsty souls receive supplies,
And sweet refreshment find.

Spreads heavenly peace around;

My ever dear delight,

Be thou forever near;

Teach me to love thy sacred word
And view my Saviour there!

HOW precious, Lord, thy sacred word!
What light and joy those leaves afford
To souls in deep distress!

Thy precepts guide our doubtful way,
Thy fear forbids our feet to stray,
Thy promise leads to rest.

2 Thy threatenings wake our slumbering eyes,
And warn us where our danger lies;

But 'tis thy gospel, Lord,

That makes the guilty conscience clean,
Converts the soul, and conquers sin,
And gives a free reward."

I come to thee, my Lord;
While not a ray of hope appears,
But in thy holy word.

Does all my grief dispel ;

mf Here I behold my Saviour's face,
And learn to do his will.

To cleanse me from my sin;

Nor danger dwells therein.

My roving feet command;
Nor I forsake the happy road,
That leads to thy right hand

Uxbridge. Ward,

Delight in the Scriptures.

I LOVE the sacred book of God;
No other can its place supply:
It points me to the saints' abode,
And lifts my joyful thoughts on high.
2 Blest book! in thee my eyes discern
The image of my absent Lord:
From thine instructive page I learn
The joys his presence will afford.
3 But while I'm here, thou shalt supply
His place, and tell me of his love:
I'll read with faith's discerning eye,
And thus partake of joys above.

[blocks in formation]

GREAT God! with wonder and with praise,
On all thy works I look ;

But still thy wisdom, power, and grace,
Shine brightest in thy book.

2 Here are my choicest treasures hid;
Here my best comfort lies;
Here my desires are satisfied,

And here my hopes arise.

3 Lord, make me understand thy law;
Show what my faults have been;
And from thy gospel let me draw
l'ardon for all my sin.

[blocks in formation]

NOW let my soul, eternal King!
To thee its grateful tribute bring:
My knee with humbie homage bow;
My tongue perform its solemn vow.
2 All nature sings thy boundless love,
In worlds below-and worlds above:
But in thy blessed word I trace,
Diviner wonders of thy grace.

3 There what delightful truths I read!
There I behold the Saviour bleed:
His name salutes my listening ear,
Revives my heart, and checks my fear.

Ę IV

4 There Jesus bids my sorrows cease,
And gives my laboring conscience peace;
Raises my grateful passions high,

And points to mansions in the sky
mf 5 For love like this, oh let my song,
Through endless years, thy praise prolong;
Let distant climes thy name adore,
Till time and nature are no more.

BEING AND ATTRIBUTES OF GOD.

L. M. Lowell. Springfield. Dunstan. 11 Existence of God manifest from his Works. THERE is a God-all nature speaks, Through earth, and air, and sea, and skies; See, from the clouds his glory breaks, When earliest beams of morning rise. 2 The rising sun, serenely bright, Throughout the world's extended frame, Inscribes, in characters of light,

And trace creation's wonders o'er,
Confess the footsteps of your God;-
Bow down before him-and adore.

Eternity of God.

London. Burford.

GREAT God! how infinite art thou!

What worthless worms are we!

Let all the race of creatures bow,
And pay their praise to thee.
2 Thy throne eternal ages stood,
Ere seas or stars were made:
Thou art the ever-living God,
Were all the nations dead.

3 Eternity, with all its years,
Stands present in thy view:

To thee there's nothing old appears;
Great God! there's nothing new.

4 Our lives through various scenes are drawn,
And vexed with trifling cares;

While thine eternal thought moves on
Thine undisturbed affairs.

God the Creator.

Greenfield. Berwick

ETERNAL Wisdom, thee we praise,
Thee all thy creatures sing;

While with thy name, rocks, hills, and seas,
And heaven's high palace ring.

2 Thy hand-how wide it spread the sky!
How glorious to behold!

Tinged with a blue of heavenly dye,
And starred with sparkling gold.
3 Thy glories blaze all nature round,
And strike the gazing sight,

Through skies, and seas, and solid ground,
With terror and delight.

4 Almighty power, and equal skill
Shine through the worlds abroad;
Our souls with vast amazement fill,
And speak the builder-God.

5 But still, the wonders of thy grace
Our warmer passions move;
Here we behoid our Saviour's face,
And we adore his love.

GREAT First of Beings! mighty Lord
Of all this wondrous frame!
Produced by thy creating word,

The world from nothing came.

2 Thy voice sent forth the high command-
"Twas instantly obeyed;

And through thy goodness all things stand,
Which by thy power were made.

3 Lord! for thy glory shine the whole;
They all reflect thy light:

For this in course the planets roll,
And day succeeds the night.

4 For this the earth its produce yields,
For this the waters flow;

And blooming plants adorn the fields,
And trees aspiring grow.
