The Gospel originating in Sovereign Mercy.
GOD, in the gospel of his Son,

Makes his eternal counsels known:
Here love in all its glory shines,
And truth is drawn in fairest lines.

2 Here sinners, of an humble frame,
May taste his grace, and learn his name;
May read, in characters of blood,

The wisdom, power, and grace of God.
3 Here faith reveals to mortal eyes
A brighter world beyond the skies;
Here shines the light which guides our way
From earth to realms of endless day.

4 Oh! grant us grace, almighty Lord!
To read, and mark thy holy word;
Its truths with meekness to receive,
And by its holy precepts live.

C. M.
Salvation by Grace.

Canterbury. Barby.

LORD, we confess our numerous faults,
How great our guilt has been;

Foolish and vain were all our thoughts,
And all our lives were sin.

2 But, oh my soul, forever praise,
Forever love his name,

Who turns thy feet from dangerous ways
Of folly, sin, and shame.

3 'Tis not by works of righteousness, Which our own hands have done; f But we are saved by sovereign grace, Abounding through his Son.

4 'Tis from the mercy of our God,
That all our hopes begin:

'Tis by the water, and the blood,

Our souls are washed from sin.

5 'Tis through the purchase of his death,
Who hung upon the tree,

The Spirit is sent down to breathe

On such dry bones as we.

6 Raised from the dead, we live anew:
And justified by grace,

We shall appear in glory too,

And see our Father's face.

NOW to the power of God supreme
Be everlasting honors given;

Uxbridge.

He saves from hell-we bless his name,
He calls our wandering feet to heaven.
2 Not for our duties, or deserts,

But of his own abundant grace,
He works salvation in our hearts,
And forms a people for his praise.
3 'Twas his own purpose that begun
To rescue rebels doomed to die;
He gave us grace in Christ his Son,
Before he spread the starry sky.
4 Jesus, the Lord, appears at last,
And makes his Father's counsels known;
Declares the great transaction past,

73

And brings immortal blessings down.

5 He dies-and in that dreadfu! night,
Did all the powers of hell destroy ;
He rose and brought our heaven to light,
And took possession of the joy.

S. M. Silver Street. Pentonville.

GRACE!-tis a charming sound!
Harmonious to the ear!

Heaven with the echo shall resound,
And all the earth shall hear.
2 Grace first contrived a way,
To save rebellious man;
And all its steps that grace display
Which drew the wondrous plan.

3 Grace taught my roving feet
To tread the heavenly road:
And new supplies each hour I meet,
While pressing on to God.

4 Grace all the work shall crown,
Through everlasting days:

It lays in heaven the topmost stone,
And well deserves the praise.

The divine Character exhibited in the Gospel
FATHER, how wide thy glory shines!
How high thy wonders rise!

Known through the earth by thousand signs,
By thousand through the skies.
2 Those mighty orbs proclaim thy power,
Their motions speak thy skill;
And on the wings of every hour,
We read thy patience still.

3 But when we view thy strange design
To save rebellious worms,
Where vengeance and compassion join
In their divinest forms ;-

4 Here the whole Deity is known,
Nor dares a creature guess

Which of the glories brightest shone-
The justice or the grace.

5 Now, the full glories of the Lamb
Adorn the heavenly plains;

Bright seraphs learn Immanuel's name,
And try their choicest strains.

6 Oh, may I bear some humble part
In that immortal song!

Wonder and joy shall tune my heart,
And love command my tongue.

CHRIST.

3 Come, join the angels in the sky,
Glory to God who reigns on high;
Let peace and love on earth abound,
While time revolves and years roll round.

HARK!-the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!

76

Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!"
2 Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With th' angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."
3 Mild, he lays his glory by,
Born, that man no more may die,
Born, to raise the sons of earth,
Born, to give them second birth.
4 Vailed in flesh-the Godhead see,
Hail th' incarnate Deity;

Pleased as man with men t' appear,
See the great Immanuel here.

5 Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

Light and life to all he brings,

Risen with healing in his wings.

Heavenly hallelujahs rise.

2 Hear them tell the wondrous story,
Hear them chant in hymns of joy,
"Glory in the highest-glory!

Glory be to God most high!

3 Peace on earth-good-will from heaven,
Reaching far as man is found."

"Souls redeemed, and sins forgiven" Loud our golden harps shall sound. 4 Christ is born, the great Anointed Heaven and earth his praises sing! Aff Oh receive whom God appointed,

For your Prophet, Priest, and King. f 5 Haste, ye mortals, to adore him; Learn his name-and taste his joy; Till in heaven ye sing before him, Glory be to God most high!

BEHOLD! the grace appears,
The blessing promised long;
Angels announce the Saviour near,
In this triumphant song:

2 "Glory to God on high,

And heavenly peace on earth;
Good-will to men-to angels joy,
At the Redeemer's birth!"
3 In worship so divine

Let men employ their tongues;
With the celestial host we join,
And loud repeat their songs-
4" Glory to God on high,

And heavenly peace on earth;
Good-will to men-to angels joy,
At our Redeemer's birth!"

f" HIGH let us swell our tuneful notes,
And join th' angelic throng;
For angels no such love have known,
To wake the cheerful song.

2 Good-will to sinful men is shown,
And peace on earth is given;

For lo! th' incarnate Saviour comes
With messages from heaven.

3 Justice and grace, with sweet accord,
His rising beams adorn;

Let heaven and earth in concert join-
To us a Saviour's born.

4 Glory to God! in highest strains,
In highest words be paid;

His glory by our lips proclaimed,
And by our lives displayed.

S. M. St. Thomas. Pentonville.

WE come with joyful song,

To hail this happy morn:

Glad tidings from an angel's tongue,
"This day is Jesus born!"

2 What transports doth his name
To sinful men afford!

His glorious titles we proclaim-
A Saviour-Christ-the Lord!

3 Glory to God on high,

All hail the happy morn:

We join the anthems of the sky,

And sing-" The Saviour's born!"
