Teachings of the Spirit.
COME, blessed Spirit, source of light,
Whose power and grace are uuconfined,
Dispel the glooiny shades of night,
The thicker darkness of the mind.
2 To mine illuinined eyes display
The glorious truth thy words reveal;
Cause me to run the heavenly way,
Make me delight to do thy will.
3 Thine inward teachings make me know
The mysteries of redeeming love,
The vanity of things below,
And excellence of things above.
4 While through this dubious maze 1 stray,
Spread, like the sun, thy beams abroad;
Oh show the dangers of the way,
And guide my feeble steps to God.
Lutzen. Stephens 199
Regeneration by the Holy Spirit.
NOT all the outward forms on earth,
Nor rites that God has given,
Nor will of man, nor blood, nor birth,
Can raise a soul to heaven.
2 The sovereign will of God alone
Creates us heirs of grace;
Born in the image ot' his Son,
A new, peculiar race.
3 The Spirit, like some heavenly wind,
Blows on the sons of flesh,
New-models all the carnal mind,
And forins the man afresh.
4 Our quickened souls awake and rise
From their long sleep of death ;
On heavenly things we fix our eyes,
And praise employs our breath. 200
C. M. St. Martin's. Stamforda
LE'T songs of praises fill the sky!
Behold th' ascended Lord
Hends down his Spirit from on high,
And thus fulfils his word.
2 The Spirit, by his heavenly breath,
New life creates within:
He raises sinners from the death
Of trespasses and sin.
3 The things of Christ the Spirit takes,
And shows them unto men;
The humble soul his temple makes,
God's image stamps again.
Af 4 Come, Holy Spirit! from above,
With thy celestial fire;
Oh come with holy zeal and love
Each heart and tongue inspire!
Duke Street 201
Descent of the Holy Spirit.
BLEST day! when our ascended Lord
Fulfilled his own prophetic word;
Sent down his Spirit, to inspire
His saints, baptized with holy tire.
2 While by his power these signs were wrought,
While divers tongues his wisdom taught,
His love one only subject gave-
That Jesus died the world to save!
3 Sure peace with God !--the joyful sound
Pours wide its sacred influence round;
Relenting foes his grace receive,
And humbled myriads hear and live !
S. M. Little Marlboro'. Haverhin 202
Influences of the Spirit implored.
[To renew and sanctify.) Aff COME, Holy Spirit, come,
With energy divine;
And on this poor benighted soul
With beams of mercy shine.
2 Oh ! melt this frozen heart;
This stubborn will subdue;
Each evil passion overcome,
And form me all anew.
3 Mine will the profit he,
But thine shall be the praise ;
And unto thee will I devote
The remnant of my days.
Olmutz Eudson. Af COME, Holy Spirit, come!
Let thy bright beams arise:
Dispel the sorrow from our minds,
The darkness from our eyes.
2 Convince us all of sin,
Then lead to Jesus' blood;
And to our wondering view revea!
The mercies of our God.
3 Revive our drooping faith,
Our doubts and fears remove;
And kindle in our breasts the flamo
Of never-dying love.
4 'Tis thine to cleanse the heart,
To sanctify the soul,
mf To pour fresh life in every part,
And new-create the whole. mp 5 Dwell, Spirit, in our hearts;
Our minds from bondage free ; mf Then shall we know, and praise, and love,
The Father, Son, and thee. 204
Pleyel's Hyma. Edyfield. Af HOLY GHOST, with light divine,
Shine upon this heart of inine;
Chase the shades of night away,
Turn the darkness into day.
2 Let me see my Saviour's face,
Let me all his beauties trace:
Show those glorious truths to me,
Which are only known by thee.
3 Holy Ghost, with power divine,
Cleanse this guilty heart of mine;
Long has sin, without control,
Held dominion o'er my soul.
4 Holy Ghost, with joy divine,
Cheer this saddened heart of mine,
Bid my many woes depart,
Heal my wounded, bleeding heart.
5 Holy Spirit, all divine,
Dwell within this heart of mine;
Cast down every idol throne,
Reign supreme-and reign alone.
L. M. Alfreton. St. Paul'..
Af COME, sacred Spirit, from above,
And fill the coldest heart with love:
Oh! turn to flesh the flinty stone,
And let thy sovereign power be known.
2 Speak thou—and from the haughtiest eyes
Shall floods of contrite sorrow rise ;
While all their glowing souls are borne
To seek that grace which now they scorn.
3 Oh! let a holy flock await,
In crowds around thy temple-gate!
Each pressing on with zeal to be
A living sacrifice to thee. 206
C. M. Grafton. Meddeld.
Aff COME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With all thy quickening powers,
Kindle à flame of sacred love
In these cold hearts of ours.
2 Look! how we grovel here below,
Fond of these trifling toys !
Our souls can neither fly nor go,
To reach eternal joys.
3 In vain we tune our formal songs,
In vain we strive to rise ;
Hosannas languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.
4 Dear Lord ! and shall we ever lie
In this poor dying state,
Our love so faint, so cold to thee,
And thine to us so great !
mf 5 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With all thy quickening powers ;
Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours. 2017
L. M. Hingham. Warto
Aff COME, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With light and comfort from above:
Be thou our guardian--thou our guide !
O’er every thought and step preside.
2. To us the light of truth display,
And make us know and choose thy way:
Plant holy fear in every heart,
That we from God may ne'er depart.
3 Lead us to holiness-the road
Which we must take to dwell with God:
Lead us to Christ--the living way;
Nor let us from his pastures stray.
4 Lead us to God-our final rest,
To be with him forever blest:
mf Lead us to heaven, its bliss to share
Fulness of joy forever there ! 208
Dedham. Ely. Af FATHER, to thee our souls we lift,
On thee our hope depends,
Convinced that every perfect gift
From thee alone descends.
2 Mercy and grace are thine alone,
And power and wisdom too;
Without the Spirit of thy Son
We nothing good can do.
3 Thou all our works in us hast wrought,
Our good is all divine;
The praise of every holy' thought,
And righteous word, is thine.
4 From thee-through Jesus we receive
The power on thee to call;
In thee, O Lord, we move, and live-
Our God is all in all. 209
L. M. Summer. Warrington,
[To prepare for Worship.)
Aff COME, Holy Spirit, calm each mind,
And fit us to approach our God;
Remove each vain, each worldly thought,
And lead us to thy blest abode.
2 Hast thou imparted to our souls
A living spark of holy fire ?
Oh! kindle now the sacred flame;
Make us to burn with pure desire.
3 Still brighter faith and hope impart,
And let us now our Saviour see :
Oh! soothe and cheer each burdened heart,
And bid our spirits rest in thee.
