17.

HOW beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace;

That bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

Thy watchmen shail lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing;

For they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion.

Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem:

For the Lord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.

The Lord hath made bare his holy arm, in the eyes of all nations;

And all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our Lord.

18.

THE earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein;

For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? and who shall stand in his holy place?

He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart, who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity.

He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O God of Jacob.*

Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lifted up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

Who is this King of glory?

The Lord, strong and mighty; the Lord, mighty in battle.

Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

Who is this King of glory?

The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.

• See Horne on this passage.

19.

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

He will not always chide; neither will he keep his anger forever.

He hath not dealt with us after our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.

As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.

For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

20.

CREATE in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy Holy Spirit from me.

Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with thy free Spirit.

Then will I teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

21.

WHEN the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.

O pray for the peace of Jerusalem; they shall prosper that love thee.

Peace be within thy walls, and plenteousness within thy palaces.

This shall be my rest forever, saith the Lord; here will I dwell, for I delight therein.

22.

O PRAISE God in his holiness; praise him in the firmament of his power;

Praise him for his noble acts; praise him according to his excellent greatness;

Praise him in the sound of the trumpet; praise him upon the lute, and harp;

Praise him in the cymbals, and dances; praise him on strings, and pipes;

Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord; praise the Lord."

23.

DAUGHTER of Zion, awake from thy sadness !
Awake for thy foes shall oppress thee no more;
Bright o'er thy hills dawns the day-star of gladness,
Arise for the night of thy sorrow is o'er.

Strong were thy foes, but the arm that subdued them,
And scattered their legions, was mightier far;

They fled like the chaff from the scourge that pursued them;
Vain were their steeds and their chariots of war.

Daughter of Zion, the power that hath saved thee
Extolled with the harp and the timbrel should be
Shout! for the foe is destroyed that enslaved thee,
Th' oppressor is vanquished, and Zion is free.

24.

WATCHMAN! tell us of the night,
What its signs of promise are.
Traveller! o'er yon mountain's height,
See that glory-beaming star!-
Watchman does its beauteous ray
Aught of hope or joy foretell ?-
Traveller! yes; it brings the day-
Promised day of Israel.

Watchman! tell us of the night,

Higher yet that star ascends.-
Traveller! blessedness and light,
Peace and truth, its course portends!-
Watchman! will its beams alone

Gild the spot that gave them birth?—
Traveller! ages are its own,

See, it bursts o'er all the earth.

Watchman! tell us of the night,

For the morning seems to dawn.-
Traveller! darkness takes its flight,
Doubt and terror are withdrawn.-
Watchman! let thy wanderings cease;
Hie thee to thy quiet home.-
Traveller! lo! the Prince of Peace,
Lo! the Son of God is come!

25.

GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is w, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.
