A THANKSGIVING after Communion: by

Almighty God, the fountain of all goodness, from whom every good and perfect gift proceedeth, I defire moft heartily to thank thee, who haft vouchfafed to feed me with fpiritual food, to incorporate me with the mystical body of thy Son, and to make me an heir of thine everlasting kingdom.

I am not worthy, O Lord, of that daily bread which fuftains the body, but thou haft made me partaker of that LIVING BREAD which came down from Heaven, which nourisheth the foul, and of which whofoever eateth fhall live for ever. O grant that my foul may ever relish this divine

divine food, and feed on it by faith with thanksgiving. Grant that what thou haft bestowed on me in this Holy Communion, for the REMISSION OF my fins, may not, by any fault of my own, become the increase of them, but may fupport and preserve me in every temptation; compofe and rejoice me in every trouble; comfort and defend me in the hour of my death, and further me in the attainment of everlasting falvation, through Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sedulius understands the "Bread" in the Lord's Prayer to mean spiritual food, as appears by his verfes here following:

"Annonam fidei fperamus PANE DIURNO,
Ne mens noftra FAMEM DOCTRINE fentiat
unquam,

A Chrifto JEJUNA fuo, qui corpore et ore
Nos faturat, fimul ipfe manens VERBUMQUE
CIBUSQUE.'

Juvencius, de Hift. Evan. i. 598. tranflates the claufe in the Lord's Prayer concerning "Bread," according to the interpretation I have endeavoured to fupport.

"VITALISQUE hodiè SANCTI fubftantia Panis, Proveniat nobis."

Athanafius understands the Epioufian Bread in the Lord's Prayer, to mean a foretaste (in the Eucharift), or the firstfruits of that FUTURE BREAD which is to be the Heavenly food in another life.
