But as he which hath called you is holy, fo be ye boly, in all manner of Converfation.

AVING thus confider'd the pattern and the command of holiness, how God is faid to be holy, and how we are commanded to be holy as he is holy; we are now come to the extent and lattitude of his holiness, it is to be in all manner of converfation, and it is in this wherein our holiness is to refemble God's, as well as in the nature of it; For as God is holy in all his works, fo are we to be holy in all our works, Pfal. cxlv, 17.

or as it is here expreffed, in all manner of converfation.

WHERE first, by converfation we are to underftand the whole courfe of our life in this world which is therefore call'd converfation, becaufe we are still converfant about fomething or other, winding and turning ourselves, as the word fignifies, firft to one thing, then to another. As where the apostle faith, only let your converfa tion be as becometh the gospel of Chrift, Phil. i. 27. that is, live and carry your felves in this world according to the precepts of the gofpel, as becometh those who profefs fo excellent a religion as Chrift hath established in the world; fo here we are commanded, to be holy in our converfation, the meaning is, that we should be holy, not only in fome few acts, but in the whole courfe and tenor of our lives; fo that holiness should be our main business, our principal care and ftudy in this life. We muft not be holy by fits only, or now and then, as occafion ferves, or humour and intereft leads us; but holinefs muft be our conftant business, our daily employment, the way we always walk in. Oh! this is much to be confidered; for many men can make a shift to carry themselves after a holy manner fome times, and upon fome occafions: But that will not ferve their turn; your converfation, your conftant way of living and converfing in the world must be holy. Yea,
