Certain Hours of the way.

The Third Hour (9 o'clock).

ALMIGHTY God, W he didst, as at this

hour, replenish the hearts of Thy faithful servants by sending Thy Holy Spirit upon them; grant me by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, that I may both perceive what I ought to do, and also have power to do it effectually; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

O Lord Jesus Christ, Who didst, as at this hour, receive the bitter sentence of death for us, when no cause of death could be found against Thee; enable us, after Thy example, to bear injustice in the cause of righteousness, and meekly to submit to men's condemnation, which (unlike Thee) we have justly deserved. Amen.

The Sixth Hour (12 o'clock).

T noonday will I pray, and that instantly, and He shall hear my voice." O Lord Jesus Christ, my Lord and my God, Who didst, as at this hour, while hanging on the Cross for my sake, enter into the darkness of God's wrath, and didst endure the awful forsaking of God; grant unto me to have this Thy blessed Passion in devout remembrance every day of my life, and at the hour of death. And by it I beseech Thee to save me, O Lord, from the wrath and the forsaking of God, so that even in the valley of the shadow of death I may fear no evil. Amen.

The Ninth Hour (3 o'clock).

LORD, my Redeemer and King, Who, as at this hour, didst finish Thy work of redemption, didst commend Thy Spirit unto the Father, and didst fall into that deep sleep wherein the Church was taken from Thy flesh; I glorify Thee that Thou hast grafted me into Thy Body, and made me a partaker of Thy redemption. Into Thy hands I commend my spirit, for Thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of Truth! Amen.

End of Day (6 o'clock).

LORD, Whose crucified Body was, as at that I, who have been buried with Thee in my baptism, may remain dead unto sin, and continually mortify all evil and corrupt affections, until my life, now hidden with Thee, is revealed in glory at Thy coming, to which vouchsafe to preserve me blameless, through Thy merits. Amen.

Sunday Morning.

LORD, our heavenly Father, Who didst give Thine only-begotten Son to be sacrificed for us as our Passover, Who by Thy Holy Spirit hast sanctioned Thy Church's weekly festival of His Resurrection; grant us so to put away the leaven of malice and wickedness, that we may be ever fresh to serve Thee as Thy children, in pureness of living and truth, ever attired, as Thy guests, in the spotless garment of a good conscience. O Lord God, Who hath lifted us up in our baptism to the resurrection life of heavenward hope and wistful longing towards Thee, draw us, we beseech Thee, in the buoyancy of Thy baptismal gift, so to seek Thee to-day in the devout worship of Thy Holy Church, and especially in the Eucharistic Sacrifice, that we may be partakers of the Resurrection of Thy dear Son, and that He may raise us up at the last day, Who, with Thee and the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Friday.

LORD and Saviour, Who didst endure the

ing of flesh and spirit didst atone for my sins, actual as well as original, I pray Thee to keep this awful deed of love in my remembrance this day, that I may constantly dwell upon it, and glorify Thee for it.

Soften my heart, O Lord, and let my flesh be so crucified with the passions and lusts, that I may live and walk in that spiritual life which Thou hast given me by the power of the Holy Ghost, Who, with the Father, and with Thee, O Lord, liveth and reigneth, one God, world without end. Amen.

(Use Collects for Good Friday, the Circumcision, or Prayer for Mortification, p. 127, or Psalm xxii.)1

I It will be found most useful to apportion carefully to every day in the week definite Petitions for Special Graces, and Intercessions.

These may be varied from time to time, according to the spiritual needs of the soul and the necessities of others, but a regular system should be kept in operation.

Holy Days and Seasons.

General.

LORD, our most merciful God, Who in compassion to our littleness and feebleness of understanding hast condescended to divide the wonders of Thy truth, and to teach them to us by little and little; I thank Thee that Thou hast ordained that we should learn the perfections of Thy dear Son, by dwelling on them separately in the various great events of His incarnate life. I thank Thee that Thou hast taught us to be imitators of Thy saints, as they were of Him. And, O Lord, I beseech Thee that on this day I may follow the guidance of Thy good Spirit, and together with Thy whole Church may be enlightened, and roused, and refreshed by the memory of .

I desire, O Lord, to measure myself by such a standard; to humble myself thereby, and to glorify Thee for Thy power and goodness displayed therein. And grant that I may profit by the knowledge and example thereof, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
