wavering in their belief, especially. I implore Thy mercy on those who have madly cast off their faith.

Do Thou, I humbly beseech Thee, convince them by Thy Holy Spirit, and disperse the miserable doubts that come between them and Thy awful truth.

O Lord, Who alone knowest the hearts of men, be pleased to touch each one as Thou only canst do it. Clear away the pride and the evil influences which have poisoned their spirits. Send to each the medicine which is most appropriate to his case. Make them humble; make them ashamed of their ignorance and their sins; make their eyes to see Thee, that they may abhor themselves, and repent in dust and ashes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Penitents.

LMIGHTY and most merciful God, Who

Awillest not the death of a sinner, but that

all should come to repentance and live; look mercifully upon those who return to Thy shelter, desiring no longer to continue in those ways which have been their ruin. Deliver them from the bondage of the evil passions from which they are now endeavouring to escape. Reveal within them the law of Thy Holy Spirit, that they may be set free from the law of sin and death. Sanctify the outward discipline of their rule to the quieting of all fleshly impulses, and empower the ordinances of Thy Church to be the means of cleansing their hearts from all evil recollections and impure desires. Bring them to humble obedience, and sincere reformation of life. Perfect within them, by the gift of perseverance, the work which Thou hast so graciously begun.

Watch over those who have now returned to the necessary labour of the world. Lead them onward from grace to grace, that they may not only have a name to live, by the respectability of their outward conduct, but a holy consciousness of restoration to Thy favour, and of blessed participation in the life of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Intemperate.

GOD, Who hast declared that they who

inherit the kingdom, we beseech Thee to have mercy upon drunkards, and all other intemperate persons, and especially upon . . . Rouse them, O Lord, and rescue them from the sinful habits which have the mastery over them. Open their eyes to see their desperate danger. Call them to escape for their lives while there is yet time. Lay hold of their hands while they linger in self-indulgence and fleshly fulness, and bring them to glorify Thee in godly abstinence and self-denial; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Soldiers and Sailors in Time of War. GOD the Lord of Hosts, we humbly com

GOD Lord of pecial care our relations,

friends, and countrymen now serving in our forces by sea and land.

We heartily pray Thee that Thy purposes may be accomplished in this war with as little suffering as possible to Thy servants upon whom its hardships and perils fall. Be Thou with them, O Lord our God, to help them, and fight our battles. Preserve them from disease, and

from the sword of the enemy; and grant that under all circumstances they may put their whole trust in Thee, and so may boldly and patiently do their duty in that work to which it hath pleased Thee to call them.

We beseech Thee also to comfort those who are near and dear to them, lighten their griefs and anxieties, and grant them patience and resignation to Thy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For a Blind Person.

JESU, Light of the world, and Sun of Righteousness; look down in mercy upon this Thy servant in his blindness. Thou camest to give sight to the blind. Give him, I pray Thee, spiritual sight. Shed the rays of Thy blessed truth upon his soul. Enlighten his mind to discern clearly the things which belong unto his peace. Though the bodily eye be in darkness, may the eye of the soul be full of light. May he have faith to look, not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. Keep him from the blindness of sin and ignorance, from all darkness of thought and deed. May the light of the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ shine into his soul. May he walk as a child of the light. And when the night of this world is ended, may he awake up in Thy likeness, and seeing Thee face to face, enter the light of everlasting day. Hear me, O Saviour, Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

For Mourners.

MERCIFUL and loving Father, Who doest all things well, and of very faithfulness dost cause Thy children to be troubled, I acknowledge Thine infinite wisdom and all-wise providence in visiting these Thy servants with Thy heavy hand, and laying upon them this cross. Make them to bow submissively to Thy holy will, and give them a calm and lowly resignation. Make the house of mourning to be better to them than a house of feasting. Soften permanently by Thy grace the hearts that now bleed, and draw them steadily and strongly to Thee. Comfort them with the hope of heavenly things, and make all earthly desires to wither and vanish away from their hearts, that they may put their whole trust and happiness in Thee only; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Parish, or District, or Town in which one Lives.

No. I.

ALMIGHTY and eternal God, Who dost

appoint to each of us our place and our sphere of work, and Who hast set me to serve Thee here, I call upon Thee earnestly for all souls herein. May Thy blessed Son intercede for them. May Thy Holy Spirit cleanse, enlighten, and exalt them. May Thy Word have free course. May Thy Sacraments be duly administered, and gladly partaken of. Bless the little ones of Thy flock, and the schools wherein they are trained to know Thee. Comfort and sustain the aged. Make those in the

prime of life industrious and honest. Relieve and restore the sick. Make the rich earnest and tender-hearted, and the poor contented and frugal. Illumine the clergy with knowledge of heavenly things. Give them the true spirit of devotion and self-sacrifice. Give them holiness of heart and life. Enable them to correct the peculiar errors and faults of this place. Make them to be faithful stewards of Thy mysteries, that when their work is made manifest, they may have praise of God. Strengthen and confirm the faithful (especially those who help the work of the Church), and give to all an earnest longing for Thy service. Gather the welldisposed into the communion of Saints, and perfect those who, being regenerate, are constantly renewed by Thy grace. Have mercy upon those who know not the foundations of the Faith; dispel their ignorance, and bring their hearts and minds to know Thee and Thy truth. I pray earnestly, O Lord, for the conversion of the sot and the drunkard, the gambler and the sensualist. I pray for those who have none else to pray for them, and for those who never pray for themselves, that they may be converted, and enlightened, and brought home to Thy fold. Stretch forth Thy hand to save those who are sinking, who have no power of themselves even to cry to Thee. Touch the hearts of the hardened, and impenitent, and careless. Bring back those who are in error, and subdue the pride of man to obedience and submission. Let not Thy Mysteries be sullied by mixture of unbelief and heresy, nor sound doctrine marred by inventions of human fancy. Soften schismatics and heretics, that they may be drawn by Thy love, and may cast away every false opinion. Convince the prejudiced, and
