remove all opposition to godly designs, and to the true advancement of Thy Church. And grant, O Lord, that Thy holy truth may be so publicly maintained, constantly taught, humbly believed, and zealously practised by all in their several stations, that we may dwell together in faith and love, and glorify Thee our Father Which art in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

No. 2.

ALMIGHTY God, we humbly beseech thee

to bless our own church and parish, and to further with Thy continual help those who labour in it in Thy fear and to Thy glory. Grantuslowliness of spirit, singleness of purpose, sobriety of judgment, steadfastness of perseverance in all good works; and bring us at last to Thy heavenly kingdom; for the love of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

For Institutions on whose behalf our Prayers are Engaged.

LORD Jesu Christ, Who hast promised that if two of us shall agree on earth as touching anything that we shall ask, it shall be done for us by our Father Which is in heaven; I desire now to join with those who have agreed with me to pray for and for . . . I humbly claim this Thy most gracious promise. I beseech Thee to pour Thy blessing upon these institutions and undertakings. Guide their counsels. Prosper their actions. Supply them with the persons and the means necessary for their efficiency. And so strengthen the members and agents thereof for all good work in their Q

respective departments, that they may effectually accomplish the purposes of their association, and conciliate the support and assistance they need, to Thy honour and the promotion of Thy kingdom, now and hereafter. Amen.

For Religious Communities.

BLES the Church wherein Thy people are

LESS, O Lord, I pray Thee, all institutions

banded together in Thy love and for Thy service. And regard, O Lord, with especial favour. and all other religious communities of the Church in England. Make true religion and earnest self-devotion to flourish and abound therein. Grant that the members thereof may be edified, and go forward in ever-increasing holiness of life, and loving trust in Thee. Enable them to put their whole treasure in heaven, and to work heartily, and faithfully, and wisely in Thy Church. And may each of these bodies cherish a friendly and cordial spirit towards the others. Put away all envy, and rivalry, and coldness, that each may work in its own province, and be comforted and encouraged by the prayers and good wishes of the rest, so that all may be together rewarded by Thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Guilds and Confraternities.

GOD our Father, we beseech thee to look with favour on the guilds and confraternities of our Church, especially our own. Guide and direct them to be the means of supplying to their members the mutual help of a godly sympathy, comforting and sustaining one another under the manifold difficulties of life in the flesh.

Strengthen those who are thus banded together to be earnest and persevering in the observance of the rules and discipline of the body to which they belong, that they may cherish brotherly love, and advance continually to a higher standard of saintly life. And may the ties of their association ever draw closer and tighter the mystical union of all in Thy holy Catholic Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O

For Fellow-Members of a Guild or

Confraternity.

GRACIOUS Father, I humbly beseech Thee to bless my fellow-members in this association. And that they may be enabled to walk in Thy commandments, and to serve Thee in their vocation, grant unto them the spirit of diligent prayer. Uphold them in all dangers and temptations, make them humble and gentle, obedient and diligent, and strengthen them with Thy Holy Spirit to fill their part worthily in our fellowship; for Jesus Christ's sake, our Lord. Amen.

For the Household.

LORD God, Who hast so distributed the stewardship of worldly riches that Thou hast called some of Thy children to be servants in the households of others, and by occupying them with the things of others hast given them signal opportunity for exercising unselfishness; I intercede with Thee for my own household.

[ocr errors]

I pray Thee on their behalf, and especially for. that in their ministrations to me and mine they may do their service as unto Thee and for Thy sake, not with eye-service as men

pleasers, but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.

Make them diligent and zealous, honest, sober, self-denying, good-tempered, and patient, forbearing one another, helping one another. Let them not be distracted from religious duties. Protect them in the peculiar temptations of their position. Reward them for all their attention and goodwill to me. Enable me so to conciliate their affection that their duty may be the easier. And finally, O Lord, make them so faithful in that which is another's, that Thou mayest hereafter give them that which is their own, even the reward of the inheritance, the true riches of life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
