Deep in the valley rest
The Spirit's gifts most holy, And they who seek are blest, Therefore, my heart, be lowly.
Lowly, I would be lowly! This frame, to earth allied, Must first to dust be humbled Ere it be glorified! My God, prepare me here For all that lies before me. I would in heaven appear; And so I will be lowly.
"Lord, I will follow Thee whithersoever Thou goest," -ST. LUKE ix. 57.
JESUS, I have promised
Be Thou for ever near me, My Master and my Friend!
I shall not fear the battle If Thou art by my side, Nor wander from the pathway If Thou wilt be my Guide.
Oh let me feel Thee near me- The world is ever near ; I see the sights that dazzle, The tempting sounds I hear, My foes are ever near me, Around me and within ; But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer, And shield my soul from sin.
Oh! let me hear Thee speaking, In accents clear and still, Above the storms of passion, The murmurs of self-will: Oh! speak to reassure me, To hasten or control: Oh! speak and make me listen, Thou Guardian of my soul !
Oh! let me see Thy features, The look that once could make So many a true disciple
Leave all things for Thy sake: The look that beamed on Peter When he Thy Name denied ; The look that draws Thy lovers Close to Thy piercèd side.
Oh! Jesus, Thou hast promised To all who follow Thee, That where Thou art in glory, There shall Thy servant be; And, Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end; Oh, give me grace to follow
My Master and my Friend!
Oh! let me see Thy foot-marks, And in them plant mine own; My hope to follow duly
Is in Thy strength alone. Oh! guide me, call me, draw me, Uphold me to the end;
And then in heaven receive me, My Saviour and my Friend!
salvation; I will trust."-ISA. xii. 2.
AVIOUR! happy should I be, If I could but trust in Thee; Trust Thy wisdom me to guide; Trust Thy goodness to provide ; Trust Thy saving love and power; Trust Thee every day and hour;
Trust Thee as the only light Trust in hours of darkest night; Trust in sickness, trust in health; Trust in poverty and wealth; Trust in joy and trust in grief; Trust Thy promise for relief.
Trust Thy Blood to cleanse my soul; Trust Thy grace to make me whole; Trust Thee all my journey through ; Trust Thee, living, dying too; Trust Thee till my feet shall be Planted on the crystal sea.
With forbidden pleasures
Would this vain world charm ; Or its sordid treasures
Spread to work me harm ; Bring to my remembrance Sad Gethsemane, Or, in darker semblance, Cross-crowned Calvary.
Should Thy mercy send me Sorrow, toil, and woe; Or should pain attend me On my path below; Grant that I may never Fail Thy hand to see; Grant that I may ever Cast my care on Thee.
When my last hour cometh,
Fraught with strife and pain ; When my dust returneth
To the dust again;
On Thy truth relying,
Through that mortal strife,
Jesus, take me dying
To eternal life.
"Come unto Me."-ST. MAtt. xi. 28,
RT thou weary, art thou languid,
Art thou sore distrest?
"Come to Me"-saith One-" and coming,
Hath He marks to lead me to Him,
If He be my Guide?
"In His feet and hands are wound-prints,
Is there diadem, as monarch, That His brow adorns?
"Yea, a crown, in very surety,
If I find Him, if I follow,
What His guerdon here?
"Many a sorrow, many a labour,
If I still hold closely to Him,
What hath He at last!
"Sorrow vanquished, labour ended,
If I ask Him to receive me,
"Tribulation worketh patience."-ROM. v. 3.
HEN my heart is sore within Through a hope of joy deferred;
When I cannot conquer sin,
Or the soul with pride is stirred; Mix for me the needful cup, Watch me till I drink it up.
