And griefs and torments numberless,

And sweat of agony;

Yea, death itself; and all for me
Who was Thine enemy.

Then why, O blessed Jesu Christ,
Should I not love Thee well?
Not for the hope of winning heaven,
Nor of escaping hell;

Not with the hope of gaining aught,
Not seeking a reward;

But as Thyself hast loved me,
O ever-loving Lord.

So would I love Thee, dearest Lord,
And in Thy praise will sing;
Solely because Thou art my God,
And my eternal King.

Amen.

"There is one Body and one Spirit."-EPH. v. 4.

[ocr errors]

HOLY GHOST, Thou God of Peace, Pity Thy Church, now rent in twain; Bid wrath and strife and variance cease, And let us all be one again.

One with our brethren here in love,
And one with saints that are at rest,
And one with angel hosts above,
And one with God for ever blest.

Oh, make on earth ali Churches one,
One with the blessed gone before,
All knit in sweet communion
To love Thee, worship, and adore.

For One the Lord on Whom we call,
The Spirit One Which He hath given;
One God and Father of us all,

One Faith on earth, one Hope of Heaven.

Amen.

"Nevertheless at Thy word I will let down the net." -ST. LUKE V. 5.

ALL the night so dark and drear

We have toiled 'mid hope and fear,

Toiled and nothing taken yet;
Satan mocks our empty net.

Standing on th' eternal shore,
All Thy toil and sorrow o'er,
Canst Thou look with pity yet,
Jesus, on our empty net?

Hark, a whisper floateth o'er !
"Launch into the deep once more;
Once again your nets let down,

And a draught your hopes shall crown.”

In the place which Thou hast shown,
Trusting to Thy Word alone,

Once again our net we cast,
Certain to be blest at last.

Lord, Thy summons we obey,
Doubt and fear are cast away,
Labour ne'er can fruitless be,
Which begins and ends in Thee.

"Blessed be the God of all comfort, Who comforteth us in all our tribulation.”—2 COR. i. 3.

IN When temptations me oppress,

the hour of my distress,

And when I my sins confess,
Sweet Spirit, comfort me.

When I lie upon my bed

Sick at heart, and sick in head,
And with doubts discomfited,
Sweet Spirit, comfort me.

When the tempter me pursueth,
And the sins of all my youth
Stand arrayed in naked truth,
Sweet Spirit, comfort me.

When the judgment is revealed,
And the book of doom unsealed,
When to Thee I have appealed,
Sweet Spirit, comfort me.

Amen.

"He shall give you another Comforter."-ST. JOHN xiv. 16.

'OME, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,
And lighten with celestial fire.

Thou the anointing Spirit art,
Who dost Thy sevenfold gifts impart.

Thy blessed Unction from above,
Is comfort, life, and fire of love.
Enable with perpetual light

The dulness of our blinded sight.

Y

Anoint and cheer our soiled face
With the abundance of Thy grace.
Keep far our foes, give peace at home:
Where Thou art guide, no ill can come.

Teach us to know the Father, Son,
And Thee, of both, to be but One.
That, through the ages all along,
This may be our endless song;
Praise to Thy eternal merit,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Amen.
