out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains* of waters : and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.—Rev. vii. 13—17.

Various exhortations.

Be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing;

*

knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: let him eschewt evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye.

The Lord's Supper.

[See also Matt. xxvi. 26-30; Mark xiv. 22-26; Luke xxii. 19, 20.]

I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That *The apostle Paul.

the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is * my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament† in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For

as often as ye eat this bread, ‡ and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's death till he come.-1 Cor. xi. 23-26.

God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ,

*Made us alive.

:

(by grace* ye are saved;) and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus. unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.-Ephes. ii. 4—10.

*Free, undeserved favour. + This salvation, or this faith, (as some think,) is the gift of God.

XLVIII. The Christian's armour.

[The different parts of the armour of heavy-armed soldiers are here described. The term used for the shield denotes the large oblong shield of the Romans, which protected the whole body.]

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Stand

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness* in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts § of the wicked.|| And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
